Jasmine's Cove, Estate of the Day

I'm not usually a fan of nautical. I grew up in a resort town, ship's wheels and rope decor generally make me itch. Today's estate in Lake Country, British Columbia could change my mind. This home combines a nautical theme with modern architecture and the overall effect is worlds away from the local fish shack. This six-bedroom home has a great room with a huge round window, a canoe seems poised to smash through the center. A curved bar continues the nautical theme and a shower enclosure is designed to mimic the ocean floor, complete with fish. The property also has a beachside cabana, water features, bridges of stepping stones and an outdoor kitchen. It is listed at $10 million Canadian.

Not extravagant? Well, I do admit the views are extraordinary. Especially from the kitchen sink and the spa tub.
I just don't see who needs a family room so big, that it has a bar and equipment of a cocktail lounge/bar? A marble bar big enough to entertain 12-20 of your closest friends?
This is another example of someone who has too much money and doesn't know what to do with it so builds himself a McMansion.
That bathroom area with spa/whirlpool tub is bigger than most normal bathrooms, and the same for the walk-in shower bigger than my standard bathroom.
Sorry, but I don't need this kind of a home in order to enjoy life and I can think of a lot better ways to spend my money by helping others, so they can be educated and learn to support themselves and their families.
The day of over-indulgence and splurging on luxuries that are not needed should come to an end.

We are huge fans of everything nautical and this house is absolutely beautiful. The exposed woodwork and marine themed decor really tie everything together. See http://www.barinacraft.com for home bar designs inspired by classic wooden boats if you love this look.

12-20 IS a small gathering of friends for me and many of the people I know, something that occurs with little planning and sometimes several times a week. My home also has a full size cocktail bar that gets used on a regular basis. I know others who have the same type of thing in their homes. Most people who care to build a bar that size know how to use it, and do.
Personally, I think the home is beautiful, though the nautical theme is slightly overdone for my tastes and the gate and front facade could maybe use a face lift.

Where to start? This is all kinds of wrong...and ugly!

Wonderful but, the usage of HDR (high dynamic range) photography in a lot of estate photos I see is a tad too much. It should be done so you barely notice it not have it scream "HDR!". Here's a good example.
With a nice wide angle lens and natural dusk lighting (no flash), it would give the potential buyer a sense of the shadows and natural light that is REAL. These are nice photos in and of themselves but, IMO, this place needs no latest Photoshop fad to be magnificent.
