The Gear Ring by Kinekt

Men's wedding bands are, in essence, simplicity itself: a plain band of some precious metal or another. But some gearheads aren't inclined to embrace simplicity. They might go for a more original material, like titanium or carbon fiber, but short of repurposing a piston ring, that's about the extent of it. Until the Gear Ring came along.
Designed by Kinekt, the Gear Ring doesn't just look mechanical – it actually is. As you can see from the video after the jump, the tiny gears across the face rotate as the larger gears that form the upper and lower segments of the ring spin in opposite directions.
A fresh take on a timeless classic, or the mechanized complication of simplicity? That's a matter of taste. The ring is available for $165 directly from the designer. Follow the jump to watch a short video clip of the ring in action.

Just ordered one - thanks!

Neat idea, but not very practical for constant wear: I wouldn't want to change oil wearing that and then deal with cleaning it out with a toothbrush, or expose it to sand, or mud.
John Feb 14th 2010 3:53AM
Actually, I think changing oil in it would be good for it. I plan on taking it apart to see how it works anyway, so doubt sand will be too hard to sort. I am mechanical and like to fidget, so this is like mana from heaven for me.
Lee Feb 16th 2010 9:19AM
Think it is clever. Sure every mechanic I know would want one.

First time my guy ran his fingers through my hair & ripped a hank out due to it getting caught in this stupid ring....it'd be trash.
Cathy Feb 15th 2010 4:09PM
good point, Cheryl....but I have to admit that my engagement/wedding bands combo rips my hair out as well, but it wont be in the trash anytime soon!! ;)

Very cool design, but for 20 bucks on overstock you can but a "chain" ring that is a tungston ring with a black metal chain that moves freely around it... of course maybe not a wedding band, but cool (and cheap) none the less!!

Sounds & looks like a good idea for a gadget fan "Me" . I'm looking for a replacement now any way .

I dont see what the big deal is. The Scottish have had a ring for many years that has a middle to it that spins. They are called "worry rings".They have been around for a long time. You can get them at any Scottish Shop.
metrocop Feb 16th 2010 1:07AM
You're partly right. It is an Irish traditional ring.

I really think this is cute! Forget the guys! I'll treat myself to one!!! :)
Reatha Feb 15th 2010 3:55PM
I think it could quite possibly be dangerous. Looks like it could easily get caught in a piece of machinery & either yank a finger off or pull a hand into a moving part. Just a thought

Hummmm... it should fall apart if thee guy takes it off.. Kind of an early warning system to the wife that she might have a chearter on her hands! lol
Seriously, it does look like it could get caught on stuff.

spinning rings have been around for a while. my exboyfriend had one. and a spinning head.
Jewlie0212 Feb 15th 2010 5:27PM
i agree that it might yank out hair! My husband and i did not want the traditional ring either though so we bought spinner bands...the part that goes around your finger is stable and then there is a smaller band around it that spins.

Couldn't they have found a hand model that didn't have some kind of fungus problem going on?
dixedarlin13 Feb 15th 2010 5:50PM
I did't notice..................so I had to watch it again, your right that was gross!!!
twojros Feb 16th 2010 7:52AM
Ha! That is exactly what I was thinking...well, not the fungus, but the so-attractive hairy fingers!!!
