When you are one of the world's richest women your closet fills up pretty quickly. Oprah WInfrey has cleaned out her closet several times and auctioned off the proceeds on
eBay before. She also sold her cast-offs at the
Oprah store in Chicago. Well, she's at it again. The
NY Post reports that Oprah enlisted O magazine creative director Adam Glassman to help her select 150 items to auction on eBay starting March 1. Oprah's treasures include a Bottega Veneta bag, designer shoes and clothing. Those interested in Oprah's hand-me-downs should known that she's a size 9 shoe and that her clothing sizes usually run from 10 to size 14 (like the purple Carolina Herrera dress she's auctioning off). The proceeds will benefit the
Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa.

It is a shame that some of the formal dresses could not go to girls who are low income or ( our child was ask to prom in 2008 and her father was laid off from his job after working sixteen years, his mother got her a dress) Some of the southern towns and cities are having a hard time with alot of companies closing and layoffs, and it is sad the children are learning hard times at a early age. We have had to say no to alot of things and I know alot of other families are doing the same. Also the south in our area falls through the cranks we do not have Mickey and Minnie to lean on. I know the Prom is not grand but it is to a child who wiil not go for she does not have anything to where. It would be nice to make it a grand event for some small town. Maybe get together with designers from Dancing with th Stars Kindly Renae Duey

dwainrenae14 .... So, some kids are having a hard time at an early age. I have lived many seasons, and I have heard many, many adults talk about how hard they had it as kids. But let me tell you this: I have never heard a person say that who hadn't turned out to be a good person, hard worker and have their fair share of common sense. This shameful social change where we now make our children little princes and princesses does them much more harm than good. It does little to prepare them for the real world, and makes them emotionally weak and unable to deal with it. Having to decline the things I wanted to do in childhood and my teenage years made me work harder and appreciate things later in life. The people I know who had it "easier" and got "everything they wanted" don't have any where near the inner strength and spirituality I have been blessed with - through the lessons learned early on. Yes, it would be nice if everyone could have a Cinderella event. I never have, but rather than pity myself, I know that life isn't fair and sometimes that's just the way things go.

Our Junior League sponsors the Butterfly Project whereby members donate formals, evening shoes and bags to be donated for local high school girls for prom. The dresses are organized by size and there is a certain day when girls who qualify can come in and choose their prom outfit. Perhaps there is something like that in your town that you could check out or if not, perhaps you could work with local organizations to start such a project.

Angela, to address your comment, I was very poor and got my dresses from Salvation Army or someone gave me one. If someone such as Oprah could have donated a dress or dresses to underprivileged children, that is more of charitable donation then South Africa school kids. But if she has her heart in Africa, then that is her choice and I respect that. I however, don't agree with you that you have to buck up or be almost mean spirited in your comments. Life deals you blows but you must remain optimistic and up beat and not treat it without compassion for others less fortunate then you. I help others when I can, and believe me I have nothing right now but I refuse not to lend a helping hand and heart to those around me.

Oprah donates a lot to a lot of people. Some of us work and would never have an opportunity to wear those types of clothes or use those types of handbags. Get over it!

Trust me our family has seen more than our share of hard times but we are the first in line to help out others and yes we have worked many many many a year for what little and thank GOD everyday for what we have. But unlike others whom only think of themselves maybe you would be a HAPPIER PERSON if you did not BOO HOO about yourself and want to do for others. Start out with something small first!!

I agree it's time we all start helping our own country, because nobody else is. We have all fallen on hard times and see really no light at the end of the tunnel.

Kim: Your thread said it just like it is. I am sad when anything happens to anyone no matter where they live but we have homeless, starving people right in this country. I know people that work at food banks and they can no longer keep up with the demand because so many are out of work now. It is sad that I we never hear of movie stars etc. putting on concerts to help the people in this country. Its sad when you hear someone going to other countries to adopt a child and so many children here are begging for a home. How can people turn their heads and are blind to what is happening right in their own backyards yet are willing to do anything for another country. Not saying other countries don't need the help but a lot of people right here do too.
cindytavernese Feb 16th 2010 9:24AM
Kim and Bev,
Right on!!! I am amazed how many people are about "Support our Troops" yet there are millions of homeless vets out there, if people really did "Support our Troops" there would no longer be homeless vets. Lets take care of our own first. You wouldn't buy your neighbors children shoes whilst youre own go barefoot.
Zada Feb 16th 2010 8:12AM
I think for once she should help Americans in these hard days instead of Africa, it' really BS thats why I no longer watch her.
heidi Feb 16th 2010 8:38AM
I agree with you we need to help americans in our own country I am tired of people sending money everywhere else but here, I only donate in our country.
