Maybe if they went back to lower room prices and the greedy airlines coooperated by making travel affordable again, I for one, would be back in Vegas 3 or more times a year. Let's get real- put pressure on airlines and get them to lower costs and we will come spend our money. We all remember fondly "the old days" when they had the 99cent quarter pound hotdogs , 50 cent shrimp cocktails, $1.00 breakfasts downtown, etc. But those days are gone, they can not make a living from us budget gamblers who go for 5 cent slots, and all the freebies we can hustle, or see on the Las Vegas strip, or downtown..

They have unionized staff that must be paid, and higher expenses - you do not hire people in Vegas for the mininum wage. So if they shut down the rooms who is to blame them. We would all like it cheaper, but they can only go so low before going broke.. Reality stinks I agree, but the old days are past days, not the current times. Right now you can stay at the Mirage for $60 compared to summer when it will cost $199. Prices go high when demand is high and vice versa. If you cannot afford to stay in a casino there are hundreds of hotels near the strip that are very affordable year round. Money is tight so scale down. Stay at a 3 star hotel instead of a 4 star. Eat out less fancy, try a coffee shop instead of a fancy restaurant. Take the bus instead of a cab, you will still get there. If you want a drink go over to the Keno pit and play a cheap game or two, instead of paying retail at the bar. Buy a gallon of bottled water at a convenience store and refill your small water bottle instead of paying $1.75 a bottle. Go midweek instead of weekend the airfare is cheaper , room much cheaper, the crowds are much smaller, and you do not have such a large group of people to walk between. Go in early January, or in the summer just after school has started back you can get much cheaper prices. If you must go over a weekend, go Friday to Monday instead of Thursday to Sunday, you can save 1/4 of your cost, cause everybody wants to go Thursday, or Friday to Sunday.

Secrets of a travel agent from Texas. - Mike

Ken Williams

Comments on Sahara Hotel Closes Rooms In Vegas Hotel Room Surfeit

The days of the 99cent giant hotdogs, the $3.95 buffets, the dollar breakfasts downtown, and the free lounge act shows is over. It was fun while it lasted, but those were the good old days, but not now. I wish it were. But with Casinos paying living wages now days if they can't make a profit they got to shut it down until they can.

Oh, I miss that gigantic buffet for $7.95 you could get at the Sahara, even that $3.95 buffet at the Lady Luck would be nice - with the free phone call from the Lady Luck to home as dessert. - Mike

Ken Williams

Comments on Sahara Hotel Closes Rooms In Vegas Hotel Room Surfeit

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Las Vegas in many instances, is partially culpable for their own downturn. I have lived there since the early 90's and many casinos were arrogant with visitors, that they had profiled as undesirables. I was detained in the Venetian for an hour, for nothing. After they realized that I was indeed a gambler with a Venetian card, they returned my money to me and claimed that the video evidence was blocked, and they were unable to see anything illegal. BS. They saw the video and I had done nothing wrong. No apology, no remorse.

I am in my fifties, age wise. I have been treated poorly at many casinos to include The Monte Carlo (asked to show my ID in front of a crowd), Treasure Island (falsely accused of panhandling gamblers for money), The Mirage (followed and questioned by security), MGM (told by casino host to leave the high roller slot area, even though that is where I like to play), Paris (asked to show ID, even though I was a registered guest at the hotel), Excalibur (waitress told me to play or she would not serve me, even though I had just dumped $100 into a high roller slot), Bellagio (asked to show ID), Caesar's Palace (my $100 bill jammed in the slot machine and the attendant did not believe that I had put my money in the slot machine, and that I was trying to get money put in by someone else. after 30 minutes of reviewing the video, I was given my $100 bill, no apology, no remorse), Plaza (told by sports book writer not to clap for my team that I bet on, as they scored a touchdown. turns out he had a bet on the other side and threatened to throw me out, if I cheered anymore), Fremont (accused of topping a bet on a card table. after being detained for 30 minutes of video review, I was given my winnings, no apology, no remorse), and many other slights too numerous to mention. This is not good for business. I am not a poor man. I work in the motion picture industry and make a good living. I do not look underage. I fit a profile that they have, and that is un-American. My money is good. I am born in the US, and my family's ancestors have been here for a long time. I graduated cum laude from a major national university on the West Coast of the USA. So, I do not feel the casino's pain. They brought it on themselves.

Oddly enough, I never had a problem at The Sahara. Other casinos treated me very well and were always professional. The good casino list includes the aforementioned Sahara, Mandalay Bay (always nice, always open minded), Luxor (paid attention to a problem and took care of it, professional), New York New York (friendly staff), Imperial Palace (tolerant, mostly professional staff), Palms (professional friendly staff, fun place), Rampart Casino (friendly staff). The Station casinos are usually people friendly, as are the Coast Casinos.

Las Vegas had better remember that without the tourist and gamblers, their town is nothing more than an overgrown desert town. Many of the casino workers despise the tourists and gamblers, even though they are their lifeblood. How stupid is that? Better change your attitude from the ground floor up. The Native casinos are closer, more convenient, and nicer to folks in general. I now live in Los Angeles and look forward to coming to Las Vegas every chance I get. I go to the friendly casinos and have a good time. The unfriendly casinos can go down, as far as I'm concerned. They have a good thing. They should appreciate it and treat all guests as welcome. If they don't change, more hotels will close. It is inevitable. The Native casinos are growing and are here to stay. Better get off your high horses and get real. Remember that Stardust is still waiting to get rebuilt. Your jobs are in jeopardy folks. Attitude of gratitude is what is called for. Vegas changed over the years and as people found cheap credit and more cash available Vegas didn't need the 99 cent breakfast, 4 dollar lobster dinners and $29 dollar room rates to lure in Blue Collar Joe. As Vegas grew the new found money stream from all the extras were appropriated to build new additions, better shows and gimmicks. Now who can afford Vegas? $149 for a room, $25 per meal and a good show can set you back over $100 and that's not even airfare. What is left to gamble? Yet gambling is the hook. Without all the extras profit margins are nonexistant yet Blue Collar Joe can no longer afford them. This is why I no longer go to Vegas. It has become a place of excess and no morals. When the Mob ruled Vegas they kept the rift raft out and put money back into the town.
