The Gingerbread White House Gets A Garden Too

The gingerbread White House is a holiday tradition but the first Obama White House has a few renovations. The replica White House, made out of 400 pounds of gingerbread coated in white chocolate took six weeks to make according to White House Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses. For the first time it is missing a wall revealing an interior with a tiny miniature State Dining Room with furniture created of dark chocolate. Outside the massive gingerbread house there is a marzipan version of Michelle Obama's kitchen garden and the first dog, Bo, is also rendered in marizipan. Check out the hi-res images in the gallery below for close-ups of the intricate masterpiece.

Beautiful , very detailed wonderful piece of art!!!!
Steve Dec 5th 2009 8:51AM
Yes, beautiful. However, this is just another example of washington living in a different, privileged world from those who elected them. Apparently, they are totally oblivious to the fact that people who elected them continue to lose their jobs, their houses, go without raises for multiple years now in a row, etc. But hey, Christmas (and other expensive routines) as usual in government and who cares if this shows insensitivity to those less fortunate. I'd rather my tax dollars be spent on 1000 edible houses given to those who really need it than impressing White House guests. Unless all the ingredients and labor were donated...

Glad to see my tax dollars hard at work.......

Just think that dog eats better then those homeless people in the streets out side the white house .

I thought Ginger Bread was dark brown? Would that have been racist ?????
Inkling Dec 5th 2009 1:03PM
I've never seen dark brown gingerbead, but I HAVE seen the White House. It is WHITE. Haven't you ever seen a baking show? Pastry chefs use spray on color or colored fondant to make whatever color they want. Do you also expect the wreaths to be brown? Grow up!
lnjstroup Dec 5th 2009 11:47AM
wow how much did that cost us, what a waste.
Inkling Dec 5th 2009 1:04PM
Did you worry about what was spent in the White House during the past 8 years of Bush's reign??? HE is the one that started this financial crisis, jobless and homeless situations in America by allowing the oil companies to raise their cost. HE is the one that created a war for oil control that has cost us trillions in dollars and thousands in lives. Obama is only following White House tradition. You'll probably complain when they unveil the White House Christmas tree, too. You people need to stop pointing the finger at somebody that had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with creating this sad state of affairs the US is in right now. Put the blame where the blame is due, George W Bush, Dick Cheney, the RepubliCON led Congress, and all of their rich friends at ENRON, EXXON, OPEC, banks, Wall Street, etc.

No, I don't expect the wreaths to be brown. that color should apparently be reserved for the first lady's garden.

To Inkling:
You are absolutely right in your observations, and I could not agree with you more!! It always amazes me how the public wants to blame Obama for the mess that Bush and Cheney created long before Obama ever got near the White House!! However, and don't get me wrong.......because I'm all for Obama and what he is trying to do, but this is an absolute waste of time and resources!!! Maybe he should be the one to stop this kind of waste and abuse, because I don't care who is the President......this kind on nonsense is a joke!! Can you imagine how much time and how many people (and what their salaries are) that it took to create this, not to mention the expenses associated with the ingredients, etc. for this cake. To me, it just does not make any sense, not even in the best of times...let alone in the current economic environment.
wub Dec 5th 2009 2:59PM
That's all fine and dandy but I wonder how they go about eating or getting rid of it.
flt2 Dec 5th 2009 3:24PM
Why are all the comments that favor the Obamas made pale. Did someone hit the "report" button because they disagreed with you?
jeffiepup! Dec 5th 2009 3:36PM
Yessss! It IS Beautiful! But! The comments made that it is costing us somehow more than any other Administraition or that this is something extra is both Ignorant and absurd!
Firstly, it's a tradition like pardoning the Turkey or the traditional Doug Fur on the White House lawn every year! So, the idea that this costs EXTRA is simply uninformed the White House kitchen staff gets paid the Same either way weather they do it or not. So, I guess the logic (or lack there of) is that we should fire the kitchen staff and make them jobless this year too hunh! And, while were at it why not cancel all Diplomatic Dinners and State Functions after all, even though they actualy form the bedrock of much of our Forigen Practice; and just act like the Broke, Busted Nation we really are.... Ya, that makes sense!?
pam payne Dec 6th 2009 6:43AM
Lovely, yes. Affordable, NO! Somebody tell this idiot the United States is BROKE! He can not continue to write checks! I'm sick of government waste and I imagine China is too. Get off your high horse O'Bama. We have never had slaves and you were not a slave. Therefore, we owe you nothing and we owe nothing to your brothers and sisters who have been oppressed. They are oppressed because that is how they were raised. And, that is the way they raise their children. Waiting with their hands out for the Government to feed them, clothe them, and pay their way. Encourage people to work. Give businesses a break so they can create jobs so that everyone can work and pay their own way.
pam payne Dec 6th 2009 6:44AM
This cake makes me SICK! More O'Bama waste. Why am I paying for him to have a bigger, better, gingerbread house than I have for my family? I have no respect for him, his wife, his administration, his white hater preacher, or for any of the fraudulent voters that elected him. I hope they all choke on this elaborate cake!!
