Kirk Hammett in San Francisco, Estate of the Day

Today's San Francisco home isn't just a piece of celebrity real estate, it's a before and after. We first checked out the home of Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett in 2006 when it was listed at $12.5 million. At that time the Georgian home in Pacific Heights was so decked out in velvet and wine colors that one commenter called it the "Shady Rest Funeral Home." Even the kitchen was red. The home disappeared off the market but now as the Wall Street Journal's Private Properties column reports, it's back. And it's a whole lot brighter inside. Hammett has had this home for a while. He paid $2.56 million for the home in 1993. The home has eight bedrooms and a music studio and a billiard room with a bar in the basement. The renovation did not change any of the home's beautiful lines and vintage wood details, but those touches are showcased much better against a more neutral palette. The former music studio is now repurposed as a family recreation area and the listing states that the area would be perfect as a home theater. This home is now listed at $9 million.

You could'nt give a house away in California, the place is so over priced, and there is such a glutent of property on the market. This house at best is worth 1/2 of what they are looking for. It's going to take the US taxpayer to bail out this state they are so deep in the hole. You can thank Bank of America for for the real estate problems out there. They gave Mario Brazairo money with no ss number. That guy is now back in San Palo Brazil and has no intention of paying. JMc

WOW he has anger issues. Yes, we are underwater with our home prices here but we are not the only place in the country with this problem. If the guy would have read the article it says it was list 12.5 million in 2006 and is now listed at 9 million. But I really think he want to say that the state of California is "deep in the hole" and yes we are. Thanks we didn't know it.

Very beautiful house. Most likely was a wonderful home to Mr. Hammett. Hat's off to such a tasteful renovation. May God Bless Mr. Hammett and may he have continued success along with the rest of Metallica.

OMG!!! What a gorgeous home. Why would anyone want to leave such a wonderful home? We have been married 29 years and thanks to this financial mess the world is in, we are loosing everything. What a dream home this is.

This house is definitely not very "Metal"...kinda explains why the last metallica albums since "In Justice" have been the way they are...like how can you get "inspired" to write heavy brutal music in an environment like this?..Im not saying he should live in a "dump"...but the ivory wall fit's good for like micheal bolton or cher..not a metal guitarist..America will always have it wrong, but at one point..had it right!!!..the times we live in..explains why we can't win a war neither..
nice house though..

Are you people all crazy? He paid $2.56 million for this house and can't get the $12 million he is asking for it? Now he is willing to settle for $9 million? Maybe he should call his mate, drummer Lars Ulrich and bum some of the money he sued for because of all the people that played Metallica songs and shared their music on the internet without giving him all their money on top of Metallica's own vast fortunes. My little 1974 single wide mobil home in the Allegehney mountians is worth way more than that house. There is love, peace, and a family I love living there with me. Hope you can survive the hardship Kirk.

I love this property. If only I have the money. Good luck on this. By the way, I know a real estate coach who could also help many in the real estate industry make money despite the current crisis.

Why do all the bathrooms look like something from a Motel 6?
