Florida Couple Tries Raffle Approach To Unload Their Mansion

One Fort Lauderdale couple has taken a the raffle route to sell their waterfront mansion. As the press release says, moving from their dream home is something the Brannans never thought would happen but the couple has decided that the raffle is the best possible solution. They are selling tickets for $10 and a portion of the proceeds go to a local charity. They are hoping to sell 300,000 tickets which would equate to the house selling for $3 million.
A portion of the proceeds from the drawing will benefit The Mission of St. Francis, a charitable organization in Ft. Lauderdale. The home has six bedrooms including a master suite which measures 1,000 square feet and has a second story balcony overlooking the waterway. The luxury home includes an eat-in kitchen, theater room with a 120" screen, four car garage, and there is a pool and a dock on the waterway. The pictures in the gallery below are small but do show a typical Florida luxury home.
The drawing is set for Christmas Day 2009 or as soon as all the tickets have been sold, whichever comes first. If all the tickets are not sold then a 50/50 drawing will be held with 50 percent of the money collected going to the winner and the other 50 percent going to the charity. Records on Property Shark show that the Brennans paid $2.35 million for the home back in 2005.

I am a single mom of 4 in Miami Florida. We never had a home of our own. How can I purchase a raffle ticket for the Ft. Lauderdale home?
Thank You, DP

I wonder what the taxes would be on a home like this each year?
janscolofsky Jun 16th 2009 8:21AM
Taxes down here are 2% of the value of the home. That would be $60,000 a year on a $3 million home.
About a year ago my credit was a mess from medical bills and some overspending. If you've never had that problem you can't believe how it messes up your life. It's hard to buy any big ticket item or even get a good job with bad credit. I found a blog, http://www.fastcreditrepairs.info/ ,that really gave me the information I needed to get my credit and life straightened out. It helped me so well that I was recently able to buy a car and pay the lowest interest rate possible. If you have credit problems you might want to check it out

According to the Broward County Property Appraiser...last year they paid 34k in property taxes. For 2009 the taxes will be approx 28k.

Yes, the taxes are 2% of the value, therefore, at a $3million price tag the property taxes will be
around $60,000 annually. What I don't understand with Florida is, how can the local economy ( ie, hourly minimum wage, etc.) support these exhorbitant fees? Florida is not like California, although the tax dept. would like to believe that. Unless you are from a wealthy state, or a wealthy person, do yourselves a favor and don't get dissillusioned by the gorgeous house. It costs a lot of money to upkeep a place like this. I've been in the same predicament and it's not a pretty one. You must be able to afford it, even if it was handed to you for free!

In addition to the 2% property tax ($60,000 per year), a house that size in FL costs a fortune to run and maintain; i.e. electric, water, air conditioning, pool and landscape maintenance, etc.
Don't become disillusioned by the $10 ticket to win this prize. It will cost the winner nearly $100,000 per year just to own and maintain this home.

Taxes on that property in Lauderdale run probably near 6K-7K annually. I did a refinance for someone whose house was way smaller, and her taxes were 3200 annual. but the insurance will hit you harder there, since you also have to have hurricane coverage... My customer's insurance was over $9,000 annually for hazard and hurricane.

If you own the home outright, you don't have to have insurance. This usually gives you a good bargaining chip with any insurance agent.
