Saks Discounts Spring Clothes, Will Anyone Care?
We've seen it for years, the rapid-fire rush through the seasons. We no sooner say goodbye to one holiday than the next one is already being pushed at us in retail stores. But now that the economic slowdown has created a logjam in the process of rapid acquisition and dispersion, the stores have a problem. How do they get the merchandise out?The obvious answer is sales and as Fashion Week Daily reports Saks Fifth Avenue is already selling Spring 2009 merchandise at 40 percent off and Barneys is set to follow suit next week. The depth of the discount is no surprise. Since the screech-to-a-stop holiday season last year department stores have been sawing away at prices to keep people shopping. In fact, at this point one has to wonder if 40 percent is even enough to get people excited. NY Mag's The Cut said, "call us when they hit 75 percent." The bright spot for stores is that they were better prepared for Spring 09 than they were for Fall/Winter 08 so there is less inventory to get rid of which does mean the discounts probably won't run as deep.

The world is absolutely saturated with clothing manufacturers and I can't see where any one of them has done anything to earn my loyalty. These past few months I've learned far too much about how women's retail is priced. So, yup, me too, call me when the discounts hit 75%.

shields,
I feel the same way about men's clothing and wont let loose of my hard earned cash for anything less than a 50% discount. Even at 50% though I'm not too terribly interested.

Now is a great time to get discounts on so many things. Italian suits for 70% off, $100 jeans for $50, watches for huge discounts, you name it.
No Apple discounts though.

It's weird that Diedre is the most prolific writer on Luxist yet is arguably the worst writer of the bunch. I would think that the practice would help improve the writing, but then with no editors or proofreaders, I guess the skills are not forthcoming.

Maybe there is no edit provision in the actual blog entries either.

This remark is, shall we say, unnecessary.

I was in Saks Chicago over the weekend. Everything is gone, or at least what I wanted! I was really surprised. The sale had started a week before, I didn't get a call, and whoosh, gone. So people are responding to just 40% off. Now a friend in the business for Nordstrom says that Saks prices accordingly for the eventual markdowns, so what looks like a sale is really a normal retail price. And when Comme des Garcons shirts are over $600.00, it makes you wonder.
