My father, being the old-man intellectual he is, started smoking pipes about 55 years ago. I thought for sure he'd die a smoker. Somehow, defying all expectations, he managed to quit smoking a few years ago. I think he had a little assistance from the fact they stopped making his favorite tobacco and he couldn't find an acceptable substitute. While his health is on the upswing, I doubt his teeth will ever recover from the decades of pipe smoking.

Smoking is, truly, utterly, asinine. That's as close to a factual opinion as you can get. If you don't believe me, check out my fathers' teeth sometime. I'm sure he'll eventually have them all removed and use dentures. But right now, they're effen' disgusting.

I'll second that. Smoking is a bloody stupid thing to do, and affecting sophistication about it only makes it more obnoxious.

(Do you do the same thing for every alcoholic beverage article that is posted? Because consuming alcoholic beverages is also "truly, utterly" asinine. The difference is you don't ever see a smoker get in car afterwards and kill someone else.)

To make a useful comment on the original article... a corn cob pipe, while neither glamorous nor high quality, will actually produce a good taste and is very inexpensive and easy to maintain. That's something that's not true of every briar pipe, although they usually manage one of those but never all.
