Not fully. Yes, it can be, but it can also still be glamourous and sexy. I still must have a cigarette in Paris at Deux Magots or occasionally while sitting at a private beach, or sometimes even in my apartment on a cold winter night. It just feels right, not nasty.

just me

Comments on A Movement to Pipes: It's the Economy

You're absolutely right. Cigarette smoking is not necessarily without glamor (and I should be a bit more tolerant ... particularly given how cigar smokers are treated). A cigarette in Paris is an absolute must.

Unfortunately, my image of cigarette smoking will always be a 60 year old woman I saw at a Blackjack table at the Tropicana at 8 AM a few years ago.

Not a fair benchmark.

Tom Johansmeyer

Comments on A Movement to Pipes: It's the Economy

My father, being the old-man intellectual he is, started smoking pipes about 55 years ago. I thought for sure he'd die a smoker. Somehow, defying all expectations, he managed to quit smoking a few years ago. I think he had a little assistance from the fact they stopped making his favorite tobacco and he couldn't find an acceptable substitute. While his health is on the upswing, I doubt his teeth will ever recover from the decades of pipe smoking.

Smoking is, truly, utterly, asinine. That's as close to a factual opinion as you can get. If you don't believe me, check out my fathers' teeth sometime. I'm sure he'll eventually have them all removed and use dentures. But right now, they're effen' disgusting.

stevejust

Comments on A Movement to Pipes: It's the Economy

I'll second that. Smoking is a bloody stupid thing to do, and affecting sophistication about it only makes it more obnoxious.

-jcr

John C. That was really useful.

(Do you do the same thing for every alcoholic beverage article that is posted? Because consuming alcoholic beverages is also "truly, utterly" asinine. The difference is you don't ever see a smoker get in car afterwards and kill someone else.)

To make a useful comment on the original article... a corn cob pipe, while neither glamorous nor high quality, will actually produce a good taste and is very inexpensive and easy to maintain. That's something that's not true of every briar pipe, although they usually manage one of those but never all.

dyt1983

Comments on A Movement to Pipes: It's the Economy

dyt1983 -- good point on the corn cobs. I have heard that the flavor can be quite good but they are basically disposable (i.e. you can't get a whole lot of time out of then). Of course, $160 buys a whole lot of corn cob pipes.

Tom Johansmeyer

Comments on A Movement to Pipes: It's the Economy

To second what dyt1983 said, corn cob pipes are much better for the money than many briars under $50 or so. They aren't as disposable as you may think - in fact, they can and do last a long time. For someone exploring the hobby of pipe smoking, they are an excellent choice and I keep several around for testing heavily flavored tobaccos or a change of pace from my briars and meerschaums. Some tobacco types actually taste better in a cob, burleys being one of them.

Aside from the cost-effectiveness of pipe smoking, another huge advantage is the endless varieties of blends out there. I review pipe tobaccos ( http://smokingpipetobacco.com ) and am crazy about trying new blends, but I feel like I've only skimmed the surface in my fifteen years of pipe smoking. Some collect pipes, I collect tobaccos...sort of.

Where pipe smoking falls short for so many is the learning curve. I give advice daily and am very familiar with all the difficulties someone new to the hobby will face. Not many persist patiently long enough to plumb the depths of what pipe smoking offers and reach "nirvana," but those of us who have are grateful each bowlful we did.

Eric
