Mrs. Obama's Lanvin Sneakers

Michelle Obama's fashion choices continue to raise eyebrows. Even her sneakers aren't safe. Michelle Obama and Jill Biden pitched in at a Feeding America event. Mrs. Obama wore a casual sweater, capri pants and a pair of shiny suede and pink metallic sneakers from Lanvin. It turns out that the sneakers with grosgrain ribbon laces cost $540 and this has tongues clucking. The NY Daily News reports that the kicks, which come in denim and satin versions have been selling well all season. Given that Mrs. Obama often wears shoes by Jimmy Choo and other expensive designers, it's not clear why the sneakers are so provocative. Is it because they are casual footwear? Given the controversy perhaps next tiime she'll head to J.Crew for the sneakers too, the most expensive pink Jack Purcell pair sells for $195.

The reason that this is an issue isn't because she was wearing $540 sneakers. It was that she wore her $540 sneakers to a Feed the Homeless event. Some people would say that it lacts tact...

"Some would say" pretty much anything no matter what she did, because they don't have the moral sense god gave a bag of laundry. It's childish in the extreme to demand monkish asceticism from those who seek to help others. I will guarantee you that not one single homeless person helped by the money raised will give one hoot what kind of shoes she wore.

What gets me mad is the damn things where made in China by a 19c an hour slave so they only cost about $2 a shoe to make but they are selling them for $540. At that price you would think they could have afforded to make them in the first world and pay a living wage.

The fact of the matter is, if this would have been a white First Lady there would be all this uproar. For that 26% of the white's that didn't vote for President Obama there is nothing that he, his wife or children will ever do to satisfy you. You just can't except the fact that they are black, millionaire's and well educated.

harry - let's review your comment about if white first ladies wore $540 sneakers, no one would care... laura bush - i don't think so... hillary clinton - i'm nauseous at the thought and they probably don't make them in extra wide sizes to fit her sausage toes... barbara bush - yea - right... so there you go - our current first lady would likely be the only one to wear $540 sneakers in the last 20 years - let alone to a HOMELESS event!!!

It's when you start thinking that $540 is "normal" for a pair of sneakers . . .that's when there's a problem. Ditto for her comment during the campaign that the $500 Bush tax break would only buy you a set of earrings. Barbara Bush can act and talk like a clueless blue-blood because she doesn't know any better. But a woman who incessantly trumpets her working class South Side Chicago roots and then parades around in designer sneakers at a photo op looks like a nouveau riche.

Oh, LaVaughan, please! This is your First Lady, and you should learn to tolerate and embrace her insincere and hostile ways just like the rest of the world has. Those preciously tacky Lanvin shoes are only a small down payment on the reparations that this angry woman believes are owed her. Although she has been afforded advantages, opportunities and luxuries beyond the reach or imagination of most, it has been noted that she can be [and -- in spite of the best efforts of a paid staff of advisers -- likely will continue to be] as rough as a COB. We are barely 100 days into what will probably be a very long ride. In view of the fact that we are undoubtedly in for a continuing flow MLRO BS, I would suggest you simmer down and stock up on some Charmin.

Michelle Obama will withstand your negative attacks because she is a beautiful, accomplished Powerhouse of a woman and a MAGNIFICENT First Lady, one we are ALL proud of!!
