Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch 40th Anniversary Limited Edition: Now In Platinum

Even after 40 years, the watch remains very true to the original. Size of the case is 42mm wide, while the crystal is made out of an acrylic compound called Hesalite. Why not sapphire? Because the plastic is shatter-proof (even though it can scratch), and a shattered sapphire crystal in a space shuttle would be a disaster. The movement is a still manually wound Omega Caliber 1861 movement. Again, this has to do with the fact that an automatic movement would be worthless in a gravity-free environment.
The platinum version is in addition to a stainless steel version of the 40th Anniversay watch, which will also be in a limited edition, but of 7,969 pieces instead of the 69 pieces for the platinum version. From afar, the only thing telling the watches apart from is the color of the engraved plate on the dial - which is gold for the platinum watch, and sterling silver on the steel version. I would guess that price for the platinum version is $100,000 plus. Still a good looking watch, but did they take it too far? We will only know after seeing what Omega comes up with for the important 50th anniversary in another 10 years.

This coming Monday i am collecting my stunning Omega Speedmaster 50th Anniversary Coaxial Moonwatch which i have paid for over a two year period thanks to generosity of my local Goldsmiths jewellers.
With the big day only two days away i am surprised that Omega introduced such a disappointing Speedmaster for the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11.
It may have a solid silver medallion and cheesy Eagle emblem on the dial but nothing really to make it so special.
The 50th anniversary is presented in that amazing inlaid wooden box with those incredible unique tools.
Also a matching crocodile Omega strap and several cloth bound books that are still selling for excellent money on ebay.
The 40th anniversary watch has a hesalite plastic crystal and basic ordinary dial.
The 50th anniversary has the very special enamel face with the superb coaxial movement with saphire crystal back and front.
Another aspect that makes the 50th really special is its pre 1967 Speedmaster dial before the Professional name appeard on the watch.
Why Omega didnot wait two years for the big event and give collectors the oportunity to own something really to talk about i donot know but it doesnot seem to matter because credit crunch or not every 40th anniversary watch my branch of Goldsmiths have obtained have sold the same day.
Nice though the 40th Speedmaster Moonlanding watch is i know which watch i would rather own and thats the 1957 Coaxial which i am collecting on Monday afternoon and im dead excited about owning it.
