Tiffany & Co. Attracts Facebook Fans

Jewelry companies seem to be a bit behind the times on social networking. It took Cartier until last June to get a MySpace page and now Tiffany & Co. has joined Facebook. The company already has more than 124,000 "fans" on its official Facebook page which was created in February. The company uses the center of the page to showcase Tiffany eyecandy as well as video relating to Tiffany designers such as Paloma Picasso.

This goes back to Tiffany & Co's identity problem. To move down market and alienate higher-end customers in a chase for volume. Or moving up market and losing volume but gaining a higher value transaction.

I am so ashamed to own Tiffany jewelry when I see this. Ugh.

Meanwhile, they laid off hundreds of U.S. employees during the first 4 days of their fiscal year. No mention of it appeared anywhere in the press. More underhanded business with a publicly traded company. Their jewelry is overpriced, passé, and gauche. The only people who take their silver trinkets seriously are teenagers and those who still think Tiffany is a "luxury" company, despite the fact that most of their sterling is made of pre-fab parts bought for pennies from vendors.
Tiffany and Company is crap.
