GelPro Comfort Mats for Kitchen and Bath
In feeding my newfound addiction to home makeovers, I recently came across GelPro mats. I immediately wanted one -- my kitchen and bathroom both have cold stone floors, which are nice to look at but hard on the feet and back. The company promotes the mats this way: "world's only gel-filled anti-fatigue floor mat relieves pain and fatigue caused from standing on hard flooring. Great for everyone, perfect for those with back pain, foot pain, or arthritis." I just like they way they look as compared to a cloth rug (especially in a newly-remodeled kitchen with granite and stainless steel), which slides around and doesn't offer any support.
The mats, which are designed and assembled in the USA, come in a variety of colors, fabrics, and styles. Try out the ones you like in the site's interactive kitchen. They even got an endorsement from our friends at Slashfood, which also features an interview with the company founder. Prices range from $99.95 - $299.95.

My thing is... why would you spend all this money on floors only to cover them up with a mat. Kind of like spending your money on a new haircut and then wearing a hat.

Andy - you wouldn't cover up your entire floor, just directly in front of the most common work areas like the sink and the stovetop or other prep area like an island. Standing and working in the kitchen for any period of time will lead to fatigue and discomfort that the flooring can do little to alleviate and these mats are invaluable and can make any standing job considerably more enjoyable.

These are expensive, plus they're heavy, and it's a pain to move them around when you're washing the floors. Much cheaper and easier to wear shoes or slippers with foam soles. Havaianas work fine.

While I love the style choices and quality of the Gelpro brand, I've found very similar (if not quite as nice) mats at some Asian general goods stores for around $15 to $20. Korean/Japanese markets usually.
