My home was recently burglarized also. And, while they only stole my wife's laptop and a vase, it was not a good feeling; especially considering I was at home and asleep at the time.

Some policies will cover theft, damage and loss - usually at a premium though - while others only cover theft and damage.

The insurer my wife and I use is fantastic and has given us very little hassle when it comes to making a claim. For example, I lost my cell phone at a movie theatre recently, and the claim was settled within 48 hours. The insurer even went so far as to give me cash to replace the stereo hands-free with a compatible model for the new phone, even though I didn't lose it. So, all in all, I wound up only paying the $150 excess fee to gain $750 worth of cell phone and the associated accessories for it. And, because the advances in technology and the subsuquent prices decreases assocaited with that, due to cost effective mass production, I got a much nicer new phone to boot. ;)

Since I like multimedia type phones, with good cameras and nice music players, I always winds up having to pay $500+ for them. Because of our exchange rate, and distance from major suppliers, phones that cost $250 in US wind up costing us $650 (NZ). Yeah, I consider it a rip off.
