This year has been a tough one for diamonds. Prices went up, supply was short and rough diamond prices shot up in the middle of the year. And then as the global economy worsened jewelry demand weakened. Now De Beers is frantically throwing money at advertisements touting the joys of cutting back and spending money only on things that really count (presumably diamonds). But before all the doom and gloom and yes, even during it, diamonds have been popping up in foolish places just as often as they have in any other year. In fact there are so many places that this year I didn't even include
diamond-covered cell phones in my yearly wrap-up of ridiculous diamond items. The piece shown at right is a
$200,000 Rolls-Royce hood ornament created for the 2008 auto show in New York. Check out the gallery below for diamonds in glassware, pet jewelry, purses and more.

You need to add the Swarovski crystal-encrusted wine barrel stopper to this. I know, they're not diamonds, and while not sublime, definitely belong in the ridiculous category!
