Luxury Retailers Slash Prices to 70%

You almost expect a Prada-clad shopgirl to announce a blue light special in aisle 8. Except you're at Bergdorf Goodman, and they don't do that there. And yet, over the weekend Madison Avenue Spy reported that Bergdorf would slash prices to 70% off, likely to compete with Saks who'd gone that far the week before.
Those on Barney's email list learned this morning that the store would go to 60% off retail. And we're only a week into December.
According to the NY Times, the recent sales have induced a bit of a frenzy in Manhattan, where lizard-skin handbags are tossed together into bargain-bin like displays a la Wal-Mart...aisle 8.

Nothing is a bargain unless you need it.

I agree Jane Doe!

It's a balance between bargain shopping and splurging, but most of it is timing. If you can be patient, you will save a lot, even buying at the top.
The morning after thanksgiving I got marked down Christian Louboutin pumps from NM, and I got another 20% off, for a total 50% off. Two months earlier they were on pre-order only at $795. Patience...

So you paid $397.50 for a pair of shoes?! Wish I lived in your world. I'm raising two kids on $387 a MONTH.

I love the current economy, because, like you, I'm stocking up on so many mid to high-end designer goods, at incredible prices, that it's not even funny. ;)
Over the last few weeks I've been getting some incredible deals on Kenzo menswear. If anyone's not familiar with the brand, it's a Parisian fashion house founded by Kenzo Takada. And, it's been part of the LVMH group since 1993.
For example, I've been getting their jeans and pants for under $50(NZ) and their shirts for under $30. Normally, their pants retail for ~$400 and the shirts are in that price range also.

Dar, then I don't know why you're surfing Luxist.com
Don't come here just to attack the target audience.
Anuk Dec 9th 2008 9:32PM
Beth, do you get some sort of commission from fatwallet.com because I have seen you post the exact same thing quite a few times (except for the opening line which is different). Just curious, not an attack.

If you stay home ,you save 100%,not 70%
Dennis Dec 10th 2008 1:38AM
50, 70% off, does that mean the rest of the time you get overcharged with out a kiss, that is saying it nice!
Closeupman Dec 11th 2008 5:55PM
Hey Tracy,
You put the ' after the u in you're, not after the r!
"You almost expect a Prada-clad shopgirl to announce a blue light special in aisle 8. Except your'e at Bergdorf Goodman, and they don't do that there."
Also, I think it'd be better if you put a semicolon before except.
Cindy Dec 12th 2008 11:14AM
Ummmm, Closeupman, I do not know where you went to school but your grammer corrections for Tracey are wrong. If you are going to correct someone else's grammer, make sure you have it right. As for Tracey, the grammer used is correct. ( At least from what I have been taught in grammar school, high school and college, being an English teacher now ). And for the record, even if the high price, name brand products were 90% off, I still could not afford them on a teachers salary.
Joe Dec 12th 2008 4:41PM
Well Cindy, for an English teacher, maybe you should check yourself before attempting to correct others.
First, it is indeed you're, not your'e, as it's a contraction of "you" and "are", whereby the apostrophe is inserted between the combined words.
Also, you're failure to pay attention to details is quite apparent, as you misspell "grammar" twice, and are unable to spell the author's name, "Tracy" correctly as well.
Perhaps if you focused on self improvement, you might be able to earn a higher income whereby you could afford to buy some nice things when they're 90% off.
Cheers!

still too much!

I agree with Jane Doe: The truth is that most of us have all the crap we need. Few of us actually really need more of anything. It's not need, it's want. Food, gas, toilet paper, imagine living a year just buying those items. CASH! Piles of cold hard cash is the best way to weather the current economic situation. I discovered one of the best books you'll ever find about finance, "How to Become Filthy Rich on Your Current Income" at www.how-to-become-rich.com. If people read books like this one we would not have the current situation we do.
