Michelle Obama's Diamond Earrings

Much has been made of the black and red Narcisco Rodriguez dress Michelle Obama wore when Barack Obama made his victory speech on election night but what about those sparklers in her ears? Vogue UK reports that the big dangling earrings are 18K white gold triple dangle earrings in pear, oval and marquee shapes covered with small diamonds. Fashion reporter Hitha Prabhakar prices them out at $10,275. Since Michelle Obama has said that the soon-to-be First Family buy everything they wear, we can only assume these were a special occasion splurge.

These vile hate-statements are a pathetic comment only on their writer's inadequacies. Michelle Obama clearly is a woman of truly rare poise, good humor, intelligence, and character. Our new First Lady models genuine Christian and "family" values-- including the ability to remain positive and gracious while being attacked with ignorant and baseless slurs! I look forward to her performance conclusively repudiating such vicious nonsense.

yeah right 10,000 dollar earrings is very christren. Why not feed some starving americans.
Maria Babcock Nov 12th 2008 7:30AM
You are a woman of high intelligence and I agree with you completely. Michelle is bright, beautiful and has a wonderful sense of herself and sense of humor. She will be an awesome First Lady and her husband will be a brilliant President.
Nita Nov 11th 2008 3:41PM
I agree she will make an excellent First Lady
Diane Nov 11th 2008 4:24PM
How can the Obamas have the audacity to spend that kind of money on earrings (I don't care if she is going to set fashion trends) when their campaign ripped into Sarah Palin for the GOP "renting" clothing for herself and her family during the elections? Hypocrits is all I can say and I hope that more hypocritical positions don't surface during the next 4 years.

The new president spoke of "spreading the wealth" by taxing most of us.....$10,000 would have gone a long way towards helping those less fortunate. I am not sure it is necessary to have such luxurious items in the White House.....Remember Barbara Bush's faux pearls...The new First Lady may want to rethink her jewelry along with her red and black dress which lacked dignity and class. A nice suit (available well under 10,000, might have been more appropriate.

10k ear rings for Obama,..just another case of of hypocrisy and double standard...it never ends
Fran Nov 11th 2008 5:21PM
Okay, let's be fair here. I never heard anything during this election concerning Michelle's wardrobe. Now, Sarah Palin on the other hand was bashed on every turn. The cost of the dresses and etc.
And by the way, isn't it Obama that wants to spread the wealth around?? Wonder how much of his wealth he plans to spread around?
janet Nov 11th 2008 5:59PM
what are you kidding.????? She is cold, calculating and has a edge to her. Her daughters are adorable and very well mannered. Maybe she should stay behind the scenes and just be a mother. She seems to do that very well. She would be best served by keeping her mouth shut.
SIJ Nov 11th 2008 6:33PM
So funny! So many of you are assuming that the earrings were purchased by the Obama's. Even the article is ASSUMING that the purchase was made by the Obama's. Did anyone stop to think that maybe the earring were a gift? Can you say...OPRAH, BRAD PITT, WHOOPIE, or even BARBARA W.. The Obama's have so many supporters who can afford to spend $10K at the drop of a dime.

The ignorance of people will never cease to amaze me. I work for a well-known jewelry store, and it is not uncommon for an individual to spend that amount of money on a piece of diamond jewelry. What Michelle Obama choses to purchase with her own money is no concern of mine, and it should be no concern of anyone else's either.
At least Barak will not start unnecessary wars that will cost our country BILLIONS!!

Since the first lady has made her first flight onto the stage of the world watching and no need for the GOP to enlarge her closet. We should all welcome the new first LADY as she attempts to bring THE LIGHT OF THE KENNEDY'S INTO THE NEW WHITE HOUSE.
Prepare for the new onslaught of designer's to line up to dress up the NEW FIRST LADY. wILL WE SEE THE SCRAMBLE OF black designers euro. designers male or female designer's falling in line to sport the new FIRST lady onto the new world stage.
I know it's not the $10,000 earings IT IS now that THE FIRST LADY NOW HAS FAITH IN AMERICA HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO HAVE FAITH IN SOME THING DID HER HUSBAND GIVE IN FAITH TO HIS PASTOR THE 10% all these years to equal the 1 time purchase of $10,000 earings.
may god bless THE PRESIDENT THE NEW WHITE HOUSE BUT MOST OF ALL THOSE UNDER $250,000----$150,000-----how about $24,000 yes that's closer to $10,000

Have you been in a Catholic Church lately? The bling in there puts many rappers to shame.
PaulaNC Nov 12th 2008 1:00AM
It has nothing to do with hate, Myrna, more with duplicity.
eulailyan mikoto Nov 12th 2008 2:18AM
Talk about a double standard.
Karen Nov 12th 2008 3:56AM
I totally agree with you, Myrna. I hesitated to even read any of the comments regarding our new First Lady's earring but happily read your comment first. There was one after your which was ridiculous but I will feel content to know that there are others like you and me. As a 58 year old mother and grandmother, I can once again feel pride in my country and in our new President-Elect Obama and First Lady Michelle. I had begun to despair of ever having such pride and hope again.
Holly Nov 12th 2008 5:29AM
For Mrs. Obama to be seen in public wearing $10,000.00 earrings is the very definition of truly bad taste. When people have worked hard for thirty or more years, lived within their means, and don't spend exhorbitant amounts of money on clothes or cars, to see their life savings in 401K plans go up in smoke in litterally a matter of hours, to see "Her" wearing outrageously expensive jewelry(for God's sake) is beyond the pale of offensively arrogant.
With gun sales as brisk as they have been in the last few days, I suspect that wearing that kind of bling-bling in public is also far more dangerous a practice than it is wise.
Furthermore, they're really, really UGLY earrings. They don't accentuate a single thing about "Her" face. You could hang those baubles on the rack at Target and they wouldn't sell for $5.00
Leon Nov 12th 2008 1:20PM
Did it bother you when the Democrats, the liberal press and left-wing smear mechants attacked Sarah Palin with baseless smears and lies? Or, are you only outraged when the press is not kissing up to Obama and his family?
Cocoroco Nov 13th 2008 8:51AM
I agree. God bless you Myrna :)
I am writing as a British Citizen living in London and I am shocked at some of the hateful and spiteful comments here.
In my view Michelle is smart and would be aware of any controversy over her jewellery so -
1. The earrings were either on loan or replicas.
2. If real were bought with her/Obama's money.
3. Were a gift from a celebrity.
Michelle has never been a first lady before so no doubt she will learn and make mistakes on the way (re appearance etc) but we should all be routing for her.
Her physical shape is what God gave her and she is working it the best she can. She is tall and elegant. What would everyone say if she was short and fat! (and there would be nothing wrong that either).
As a lawyer myself I worked hard to achieve what I have and I did not come from a rich background but once I 'made it' I liked to treat myself. That said I help and support other less fortunate than I with time and £ including family members and others (as do the Obama's) they have worked to their way up. I am sorry I am obviously mistaken, I thought that was the American way??
It is not a sin to enjoy luxury things as long as one knows that these things are material treats and do not define a person.
Also people have been lauding and applauding Jackie O (whoM I also love) but never did a first lady indulge in her passion for Jewellery more than Jackie O (although admittedly some was purchased during her second marriage to Aristotle Onassis) but President Kennedy bought her oodles while he was in office.
The hating towards Michelle is pure jealousy and sour grapes, after all why would anyone bother to sit down and write bitchy comments if they were not jealous of her success
