Wife of Washington Lobbyist Uses Money as Wrapping Paper

When it comes to gifts usually it's what's on the inside that counts, but that's not necessarily the case for the gifts Edwina Rogers gives -- she wraps her presents in money. Uncut sheets of real, government-issued, dollar bills.
The wife of Washington lobbyist Ed Rogers gets the money sheets from the United States Bureau of Engraving (you can order them for yourself here) and then slices and dices as you would any wrapping paper to best fit the gift and get the best pattern on the front of the package (in this case it's lining up Washington's face just right). No matter that she regularly cuts several bills in half in the process, to be frugal she sticks to the dollar paper and only uses it to wrap "small" gifts.
A sheet of money paper consisting of 32 $1 bills sells for $55.

And to think, we are supposedly in the throes of an economic recession. The horror!
wendy Sep 9th 2008 3:00PM
This isn't a new thing. Some people even use higher denominations. And they've been doing it for decades. I've also seen notepads from recycled bills, and shredded money (with a notation stating that they probably would become collectibles because the Government now pulverizes old bills instead of shredding them).
If you think $55 is a lot for 32 $1-bills, what about
$900 for 16 $50-bills?
badall5 Sep 9th 2008 2:57PM
Definitely would NOT pay $55 for a sheet of $32 one-dollar bills. And where the heck is the other $23 going to? Talk about an extravagant amount of money to offset shipping and whatever the heck else. And plus its supposed to cost less than $1 to make a dollar bill, otherwise its not worth making!
I'd only pay face value for it (and MAYBE up to $2 more to offset costs)

Cliff, lobbyists are not paid by the government they are paid by the corporations and PAC's that employ them. Lobbyists are also a necessary part of our political process since those in congress would have no clue what to do if someone was not there telling them how legislation is going to effect our country. Without lobbyists congress would be writing laws with unintended consequences that could cripple parts of our economy or undermine our constitution (even more than they already do). The fact is lobbyists are acting on the behalf of various groups within the American public and that is how we gain influence with politicians. Do you really think a politician would listen to you if you weren't represented by a lobbyist?
I am not a lobbyist nor do I work for one.

It's a great idea. The only thing that's bad about it is the fact that she cuts the bills in half if necessary.
Who wouldn't appreciate receiving a gift whose wrapping is a gift in and of itself? Cut it up and spend it!
vgkflc Sep 9th 2008 3:01PM
Its not spendable money. If you look at what the woman is doing you will see her point. But thats just it to many only look at the surface and miss the hole point. Look at what we have done with our country, lookat who we let in office.Or should I even waste my breath???
wendygoerl Sep 9th 2008 3:02PM
Well, they do come in a shipping tube that probable cost more than $2, and that probably includes shipping
Ron Sep 9th 2008 3:13PM
I think Obama may lose because he is a socialist who will ruin our economy, decimate our armed forces, destroy the best healthcare system in the world, and try to get everyone dependent on the federal government to increase the power that it has over their daily lives.
He may also lose because he sat in racist church for twenty years, had friends who were domestic terrorists, has worked for ACORN, or because his leadership experience or list of accomplishments is incredibly thin.
I don't think he'll lose because he is black.
Cindy Sep 9th 2008 3:17PM
So that is $23 for shipping and handling?
Jen Sep 9th 2008 3:39PM
I 100% agree with you Ron! People need to learn to educate themselves before making "ignorant" comments. Open your eyes people!!!

I am soo sick of "poor" people complaining about what everyone else has. That's why you are and always will be poor. I was brought up not to envy what others have or feel guilty about what I have. You have every opportunity that others do, if you have your health. We have been rich, poor and everything in between at times. For the person bringing up the mortgage crisis, its YOU the "poor" that couldnt possibly afford the home you got and now foreclosed. WE the"haves" have to bail out. Ordering my sheet of bills right after this post.

I don't really think that wrapping presents in money is such a great idea.
Avi Sep 9th 2008 4:43PM
May be the US Government should pursue Gift wrapping business,,,, seems profitable they may be able to subsidize the health care bill this way or may be compete with Hall Mark- I am sure Hall Mark can teach them few things ,,,such as using these Lobbyists as stuffed animals... I am sure they will sell for less than a sheet of $1 bills...
Sandy Sep 9th 2008 4:43PM
CLIFF: A Lobbyist is not paid for by tax dollars. They are paid by some large special-interest group, or coporation, who pays them to try to convince members of Congress to vote in favor of whatever would benefit their special-interest group or corporation. Example: Tabacco companies!

Another law that Washington doesn't uphold... what a sad place we are.

or are in actual use or circulation as money within the United States;or whoever fraudulently possesses, passes, utters, publishes, or sells, or attempts to pass, utter, publish, or sell, or brings into the United States, any such coin, knowing the same to be altered,
defaced, mutilated, impaired, diminished, falsified, scaled, or lightened? Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.?

I've wrapped a gift in dollar bills but i taped the dollar bills together! Just do it from the inside and leave the clean outside out! I only do that for kid gifts.
