Thanks to the calculator-savvy fashion dept. over at Vanity Fair, we've got an estimated grand total for Cindy McCain's outfit from Tuesday evening's Republican National Convention festivities. The final cha-ching? $300,000. Highlights include her Oscar de la Renta fierce-collared shirtdress, a pair of $280,000 diamond sparklers and Chanel's J12 white ceramic watch. The shoes have yet to be identified -- any guesses readers? (I'm betting Manolo.)At least in the realm of fashion, Cindy is the elitist in this race. Remember Michelle Obama's pick for her appearance on The View? A $148 number from mass chain White and Black.

I'm happy for her that she can afford to own such nice things. Rather than show your jealousy for something lame like clothes, why don't you learn more about her devotion to those around the world less fortunate than herself and most spoiled Americans. She's not just talk, she walks the walk. She's an inspiration we should all be proud of. Get your head out of the sand.

I know that ear rings may legitimately be considered part of an "outfit" but seriously? Let's not make it sound like they were an exclusive purchase just for the RNC and that they will not be an every-day enhancement to the wardrobe. I mean, I guess if we KNOW that they were on loan, or purchased for the event, it may be a valid claim, but in all fairness let's just say that the "outift" was somewhere in the neighborhood of $20k. The McCain's are wealthy people and a $20k outfit is not something to be considered extravagant for an event like this, nor is a $280k pair of ear rings for that matter. My uncle is a wealthy man and I remember him spending over $100k on a diamond for my aunt back in the late 80's for their anniversary. It was his gift to her from him and she wore it every day. I would hardly say that she was wearing a $100k outfit every day of the week. Anyway, no bitterness here. This is the ONLY blog that I visit EVERY day, several times a day. Keep it up!

I have to agree with the others on this... Good for Cindy McCain. Her family worked hard and earned their fortune and why should she feel ashamed? It's not like she's an insensitive person who does zero charity work...
Hell, I know lots of people who are elitists, and they aren't even wealthy (think of the people making $80k a year and driving around in a BMW 7 Series and displaying a $500 handbag)....
Let me guess here... Are the critics suggesting she should be giving away all her wealth to those that haven't earned it (i.e. redistribution)? If that's the case, god help our country - because no one in their right mind would ever have the goal of achieving the American Dream - for fear that after all that hard work, it would have to be redistributed to others....

Was so glad to read all the praise for Mrs.McCain.I think people who make rude remarks about the wealthy spending THEIR money are just jealous.People just have to complain about something. If she came out dressed way down they would say,she has enough money to dress better than that.

I think that this is a sign of how they handle their expenses, they are definitely not going to be representing the poor and have no idea what the poor people think, how can they solve the issues of the majority when they own dresses the price of homes.

Personal lives always blend into business, and in this case we're talking politics. At least McCain doesn't need the money.

Of all the places on the internet to find a comment degrading the success and spending habits of the wealthy! Tracy, you may choose to remember that when offering a blog catering to and highlighting goods and services aimed directly towards "elitist" that you a choose tone as not to offend. My, the liberal ladies are indeed picky as to which ladies they defend and those they chastise or....envy.

Cindy McCain is always near flawless, as Betty Butterfield (youtube it) has informed us all. I'm a Democrat, but have no problem with Cindy McCain looking like a million bucks all the time. Laura Bush in this photo does fail to compare, although she is appropriate for her position and age.

I have no problem with her dropping that kind of cash on an important event, but I'm taking issue with what she actually wore. I didn't like the tailoring or the color, and the Chanel J12 was a weird choice. Also, while I am normally all about the upturned collar on any woman over 40, this one turned me off. I thought it was harsh and unflattering. Surely she could have provided an antidote to Laura's staid suit without this take-no-prisoners couture? It just doesn't say "First Lady" to me...

like someone already mentioned, cindy walks the walk - so, good for her, i especially loved that GREEN dress she had on :) who are we to tell people what to wear and at what cost! for all we know [and what i highly suspect] the designers may have begged her to showcase their work and she may have paid for NOTHING .. it doesn't matter, it's her money .. and i'm a female/black/democrat ... go girl .. fyi, mrs. obama has some expensive taste as well .. so .. it's none of our bizness - i am just trying to figure a way to get Piper and Trig in the white house without the rest of the brood ...

Seems to me she could have gotten a lovely $30,000 outfit and donated the rest to needy american children. It's vulgar to flaunt wealth while so many have nothing.

So how do we know that she was not looking at a $400k out fit and opted for the $300k outfit and gave the rest to charity. oh wait, we dont know. Why dont we know? because it is none of our business. How do you know the earrings were not a gift? from anyone? we dont. why dont we know? well, you get it. it is not our place to put a spending limit on someone else's wealth whether they can afford it or not. what impact does it have on anyone else? absolutely none, except the individual or business that she bought them from. now...i wonder who that was...
