The $150,000 Hermès Crocodile Peacoat
This is without a doubt the most extravagant men's item we've come across for fall (or any other season, for that matter): a $150,000 peacoat from Hermès made entirely of crocodile skin. The ultra-luxe interpretation of a menswear classic, which originated with European navies some 250 years ago, was produced by Hermès men's designer Véronique Nichanian for the famed fashion house's Fall / Winter 2008-09 collection. The Hermès flagship store on Manhattan's Upper East Side just received two of them, in navy blue; other colors may be special ordered for delivery in 3-4 months. [via Kempt]

Just two years ago, the flagship in NY had the a full length peacoat instead of the 3/4 length in bright red crocodile for over $250K. I would never something like it but it was a beautiful coat.

Fully processed croc hides only cost about $600 a piece wholesale. And, I can't imagine Hermes using more than 3 to make a peacoat. By my calculations, that's $1800 for 3 croc hides, a few dollars for the buttons and clasps, and probably a few hundred for production: total around $2100. Very strange: that doesn't add up to $150K!
Maybe Hermes needs a new accountancy firm. LOL!

Even if Hermes used as many as 6 croc hides to make this coat, the materials and production cost would still be around $5K. Therefroe, Hermes is asking one to pay a 3000% markup for this coat. Riiiight! ;)

You're paying for the Hermes name...not to mention the ability to claim that your jacket costs more than most peoples' cars.

Well, the Hermes names is not worth a 3000% markup to me. And, the ability to claim that my jacket cost more than most people's cars is not something I'm interested in. Besides, I already own some garments that cost more than some people's cars. So, what of it? ;)

Funny thing about Hermes, they make you pay all the way--if the coat needs conditioning later (and it will) or if a button needs replacing, you will pay for those services, and pay fully and dearly. Unlike LV who will repair bags for free at their NYC store. I always thought it was less than nice of Hermes to charge for small services on expensive items.
