World's Largest Record Collection Can't Find A Buyer

Paul Mawhinney has a big problem -- his enormous collection of records that exceeds the interest of most wealthy, potential buyers. Appraised at $50 million Mawhinney is only asking for a mere $3 million hoping to sell the collection before his blindness and diabetes make life any more difficult. Sure, iPods are fantastic and digital music is a great addition to our ever more tech-driven lives but a historic collection of this magnitude belongs with another true music connoisseur or in a museum. Anyone with the means and a passion for tunes should consider making Mawhinney an offer -- it is most likely the only collection of its kind.

This collection is fascinating. I'm not sure I would want it, but wouldn't someone like Madonna or Bono, someone involved with saving music, or maybe MTV, want this? Maybe it's just not been broadcast far enough. Let Luxist do the work!

This is nuts! Anyone who's ever flipped through any given stack of records knows how awful and worthless 95% of them are. There's a big difference between a collection and just hoarding! While Mawhinney no doubt has some gems, he also has literally tons and tons of garbage -- it's the equivalent of having a library that's got 1,000 harlequins for every classic. Commission someone to sell the quality pieces individually on eBay, sell the rest in lots and be done with it!

That is an absolutely brilliant idea Michael. I truly hope Mawhinney reads your post. It's so nice to read some intelligence in the comments for a change.

If ya bought it, what the hell would you do with it? The records would sound crappy compared to cds, it would take up a huge amount of space....I mean, who would want it?

If it were mine, I'd go back to the idiot who appraised it at 50 Mil and offer to sell it to them for 5 Mil. It was obviously overpriced (valued) for insurance purposes or the evaluater is a fraud and should be called to task for this abortion of valuation on this collection. Either that or there should be a suspicious fire that would wipe it all out and pay 50 mil to the owner.

records sound better then cds, if you like the authentic sound of the records. my record of the jackson five autographed back in the day sold for a mere 30,000 not bad. records have value bud
