Ridgefield Modern, Estate of the Day

We've been looking at a lot of traditional homes lately so let's mix it up with a big slice of modern. Today's home was designed by architect Rafael Vinoly in 1994. It sits on a five acre hilltop setting with long views in Ridgefield, Connecticut. The home has both indoor/outdoor pools and a glass bridge to the private tower which houses the master bedroom, penthouse office and an observation deck. The interior features lots of heavy concrete, wood ceilings and so much stainless steel, the owner probably has to employ a designated polisher. It's stunning but I wonder how easy it is to live in. It's listed at $10 million.

There is something awkward about this home--maybe it's out of place in CT, maybe the interiors are too severe and then the furnishings try to be warm and cozy, but something is off. There's an impersonality about it. And that massive stairway entrance, so reminiscent of his public buildings, seems impractical in a home.

I agree about furnishings. They don't go well with the architecture. The home is quite striking though. With 16,000 square feet, only two bedrooms and a 10 million dollar price tag, this one may be a tough sell.

I'll bet you need a designated conversationalist intermediary to defeat the echo is such a caverous heavy place as well -- someone to whisper to, who will then walk over in their padded bunny slippers and whisper your thoughts into the other person's ear.

It has this glass&steel, business feel to it. The living and dining area actually look more like a lobby...those area rugs are atrocious.

The whole thing feels a bit cold to me - kind of like an office block or business tower. I think it's all the stainless steel that's turning me off. Also, I think the building would better in an urban setting, and not out in the middle of the country.
All and all, it reminds me of a concrete bunker. This can work - I've seen other examples of it that I've liked. But, it's not working for me this time. It doesn't really matter though, as I don't have the 10 mil to spend on it! LOL :)

I like the ENORMOUS pot and dead plants in the kitchen. I was going to pan this place until I saw that.

it seems more like an office than a place to actually live in...the location is very nice though.
