Shaq On Star Island, Estate of the Day

I've been talking about this estate since way back in 2005. That's when basketball star Shaquille O'Neal first started trying to unload his house on Miami's prestigious Star Island. O'Neal bought the home in 2004 for $19 million soon after joining the Miami Heat. The WSJ's Private Properties column reports that the home was built in 1992 by Heat center Rony Seikaly. The home does have a certain gargantuan scale but that's not unusual in some multimillion dollar South Florida homes. It has eight bedrooms, an indoor basketball court, gym, steam room and sauna. The 2.5 acre grounds include a tennis court, six-car garage, dock, two-bedroom guest house and Shaq's pool complete with Superman logo. The home is lavish but not particularly distinctive, money used to its blandest potential. The price is now $29 million. If I were to take a bet on a final selling price, I'd guess that Shaq's going to have to cut a few more millions off this one. My guess is $23-$25 million.
UPDATE: The home was briefly off the market after a deal in the $19 million range fell through. The home is now listed at $22 million.
SECOND UPDATE: It is now listed at $22.5 million.

At Least Rap Music is good for Walking/exercising that 92% of you people should be doing EVERYDAY..
$25 Mil would give him a 8% apy ..Which is average for this area..
Bet He got suckered by His Agent to list it High, to get the listing.. Typcial REA trick...
Just because your Rich, doesn't mean your Real Wise about everything...

Donate it to the homeless would be a good tax deduction.

hmmmmm as much as Shaq's home is stunning and certainly no one would have problem with the superman logo I imagine the taxes on this beauty are killers. Oh well, good luck Mr. O'Neil.

Miami real estate was so over priced for many years, like a lot of other areas.
And now in the last year or two, these unreal greedy owners, are facing reality.
The house is nice, but the price is unrealistic in todays real estate market in Florida.
The Star Island location is no longer the "hottest" location for pricey real estate selling.
I will agree with some of the posters, the house does look rather boring, there is not a unique style to it.
If one has 30 mil or so to spend, there are so many better options, including having a home custom built to your own taste in another location.

This house as well many other mansions are just that, MANSIONS. They are NOT homes, I would rather have a home than a showplace.

Maybe Shaq ought to think in terms of the rest of the economy - house is down 20-30% from 2005. That makes his house worth about 15M. He needs to get a grip just like us po folks.

The problem with trying to sell a home THAT BIG, is most wealthy people want to live in a nice HOME not a nice hotel.
ROB Aug 31st 2008 2:49PM
My furniture will look out of place in these digs. I see nothing wrong with his house. Looks better than some of the other multi-million snobbish homes that are up for sale. Maybe that is why it is not selling it is not snooty enougn for the upper crust bitches.
chrissy Sep 1st 2008 2:41PM
it has so much space that you dont need...
seriously who wants to live in that kind of house? i dont i dont even want half that... my friend has lyk a mini version of that... a pool a beach on a lake gorgous view and a huge house and even i think its too big... stars shoodnt live in that they dont need it! what about all the homeless if star island was givin up to the homeless itd be aweosme millions and millions of ppl could have homes even if it had a ton of ppl in the same house its better then living on the streets... too bad itll never happen

It is an absolutely beautiful home, but I agree with the poster who said for that kind of money you can build your own dream house the way you want it. It does appear a little on the "cold" side and a few nice house plants might fix that problem. Still, for that kind of money, I would build my own...
joseph Sep 1st 2008 3:44PM
Boring, unimpressive and WAY over-priced in the Bush economy. He will be very lucky to get $15m from a foreign buyer.
I actually prefer my own house.
tom brown Sep 1st 2008 4:08PM
I may be wrong, but I do not think a difference of, some $4-6 Million for the house will make alot to the seller or the buyer. Personally, if I had the money, wish I do not have, I would not give him $100.00 for the whole thing. Florida does not do much for me.

There's a wise saying by an old sage named 'Gerard Haughey' in regards to excess housing, here it is; "I'd love to own a Mansion with a hundred rooms... and if I did I'd still be in only one at a time. So I saved my money and bought a 1 bedroom" classic!
