Oprah Winfrey To Auction Off Cars For Charity

I had no idea that Oprah Winfrey had a car collection but she does and she's auctioning off three vehicles from her private collection: a red 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing formerly owned by the DuPont family, a 1988 Rolls-Royce Corniche II Convertible given to her by John Travolta and a 1997 Aston Martin DB7 Volante to benefit her school in Africa. The action will be held by by Gooding & Company and will take place at Pebble Beach on Saturday, August 16th and Sunday, August 17th. The auction catalogs are available for $100, which includes viewing and auction admission for two, while general admission is set at a price of $40 per person.

The 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing is estimated to sell for $600,000-800,000, the 1988 Rolls-Royce Corniche II Convertible is estimated at $70,000-100,000 and the 1997 Aston Martin DB7 Volante is estimated at $50,000-65,000. Of course, because of the celebrity provenance, it is Oprah after all, these cars could sell for more. The vehicles will be on display August 13th through August 17th. The cars will be sold without reserve and 100% of the proceeds go to her school in South Africa.

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls – South Africa, is located in a suburb outside Johannesburg and provides education for girls. It opened in January 2007 and offers a private learning and residential environment for approximately 450 girls in grades 7-12, Oprah has already donated more than $40 million toward the creation of the Academy.

I take offense to any man who calls a woman a bitch. It seems to me your mother did not raise you right. When you speak in such terms of another woman you are speaking about your mother, sister, aunts, wife and daughter(s) (if you have any). Shame on you, you’re not able to express yourself with better vocabulary? This tells me that your not educated enough to think or express yourself in an intelligent form, so why are you speaking you idiot! This also shows me that you are jealous of this woman who makes more money than you and has done tremendous things for people here in the U.S.A. and you think her earnings entitle you and anyone else to have her spends her money your way. How soon dumb people forget what another has done to give back. I tell you what big mouth, go and build your own company, make millions and you too can give back by building a school in the U.S.A. Instead of you being mad at the government for not instating more funding into the school system in this country as well as building new schools we have to contend with fools like you who blames a business and calls her a bitch.

Why did you not complain about Martha Stewart who has been on the cover of LIVING with Martha Stewart since its conception? Now tell me, come on you can do it…who sounds dumb? That’s right YOU!! Go to Barnes and Noble and read about marketing and finance and big business. I know you will hate to do this but also go get a book about Africa and learn that there is a thing called White Africana’s. You just might learn something!

I also have a school in Africa. Not of course to the scale of Oprah's...but a school nonetheless. Why there and not here? Well...if you ask an impoverished child in America if they could have anything...what would it be...they would tell you an iPod...or playstation...or Nike Air Jordans...et al. If you ask an impoverished African child what they would want if they could have anything...they would say "an education"...books. That's why.

40 Million for 450 girls? Do the math. That's $88,888.88 for each girl. Geez! Are they attending Harvard or what? In a country where most people earn far less than $1000 a year. Where's the money going, Oprah? Just like NFL great Reggie White (RIP) collected millions in contributions to rebuild his church that burned down. It's still not being built, and whenever any reporter asked where the money went, interview over! The rich get richer. Maybe Oprah is paying Gayle a few million a year to oversee the project.

I totally agree!!!! Yeah, great, send something there.. but we have people right here (USA) that are in need as well. From all walks of life- You like it there, well, take your dam show to Africa..There are also people in other countries all over the world-other than Africa as well if she'd consider equality.

i never liked Oprah. She started out giving away lavish gifts to all the people in her audiences. I think the real reason she did this was to win over a lot of stupid people who couldn't see that she was bribing them. I think the attitude that a lot of rich people have is this; if your rich it makes you better than everybody else. It doesn't change if your black. I think most black people are a lot more concerned about race than white people ever thought about being. And I have always felt she was prejudiced against whites but tried to hide it. I think the majority of black people are voting for Obama is only because he is black. And I think she is just another black person who is using her money and influence to help black people only. Obama and Oprah would like white people to believe their on their side but it's just a con. I don't trust Obama or Oprah.

Oprah is another influential Black American that continues the cycle of separation. Just like Whoopi's comments of a week ago. Blacks and Whites live in different worlds. Continued thoughts like that and America will NEVER be one Country. Oprah HAS changed in MANY ways. She was once a person who seemed to want to bring the races together. It doesn't appear that way to me and many millions who used to watch her show, daily. Now, all she does is flash her face on "her" magazine, brag about her multi million dollar houses, and brag about all her good deeds in OTHER countries. It IS her money and she can most certainly, do what she wants with it. I think she's turned into an obnoxious bore.

I personally, DO NOT like Ms. Oprah!!! She DOES help the POOREST of PEOPLE, ALL RACES as well, BUT MORE OF HER OWN COLOR then WHITE....Sure she has money, sure she has beautiful homes and more then 1 car. HOW ABOUT GIVING THEM TO CHARITIES, instead of an AUCTION? GIVING, WILL mean she cares more and in all due respect, I think she is a b...h for NOT giving them away...How come she never just donates things to charities or Oragizations that NEED a CAR to transport patients to and from appointments, (ex: kidney fund,American Cancer Society..etc)? In MY opinion, She has the money to do more then enough for all walks of life and then some, But why hasn't she made the effort for American people instead of African-Americans in another Country? The only thing I heard her do for any AMerican, was rebuild New Orleans when they were hit with Hurricane Katrina and it wasn't just her, many other people helped them out as well....

Is she giving to relatives or something? I agree, she COULD keep her dollars here but maybe she's punishing the women who used to love her. After all, her ratings have gone down three years in a row. Now me, I liked her better before she became "The Lord".

You're right on with this -- I agree 100%. Furthermore, after learning of Rev. Wright's unfortunate "blatherings" filling the minds of his congregation with hate against white America, it's obvious where the prejudicial lines are formed in this country -- and the responsibility does not belong to the white majority which is not a surprise to most of us.

I used to like Oprah once upon a time. Now I watch her show and she makes me grit my teeth. She comes off as a "know-it-all". It seems that every guest she has on knows less than she does. I find this very aggravating.
I'm also not happy with the fact that she openly supported Obama. This is her right but I still don't have to like it!! Which is MY right, too.
As far as her being prejudiced, I don't believe that's true. She's pretty generous when it comes to giving. Whether the person/people are black, white, brown, red, yellow, or polka-dotted.
I just think that she believes she knows more than anyone else. At least she comes off that way.
I definitely would like a couple billion to donate here and there.
