Oprah Winfrey To Auction Off Cars For Charity
I had no idea that Oprah Winfrey had a car collection but she does and she's auctioning off three vehicles from her private collection: a red 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing formerly owned by the DuPont family, a 1988 Rolls-Royce Corniche II Convertible given to her by John Travolta and a 1997 Aston Martin DB7 Volante to benefit her school in Africa. The action will be held by by Gooding & Company and will take place at Pebble Beach on Saturday, August 16th and Sunday, August 17th. The auction catalogs are available for $100, which includes viewing and auction admission for two, while general admission is set at a price of $40 per person. The 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing is estimated to sell for $600,000-800,000, the 1988 Rolls-Royce Corniche II Convertible is estimated at $70,000-100,000 and the 1997 Aston Martin DB7 Volante is estimated at $50,000-65,000. Of course, because of the celebrity provenance, it is Oprah after all, these cars could sell for more. The vehicles will be on display August 13th through August 17th. The cars will be sold without reserve and 100% of the proceeds go to her school in South Africa.
The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls – South Africa, is located in a suburb outside Johannesburg and provides education for girls. It opened in January 2007 and offers a private learning and residential environment for approximately 450 girls in grades 7-12, Oprah has already donated more than $40 million toward the creation of the Academy.
[Thanks, Ashley]

Remember that money will never make you happy. But then, happy will never make you money. That might be a wise crack, but I doubt it.

Well you can buy a 1988 Rolls cheaper than that on Ebay and I think if you shopped Ebay you might find the Aston Martin and MBZ too. I say well good for Ms Oprah, you can only drive 1 at time anyway.

Well I have to agree, you mean that there are no deserving young women in this country? Please do note too that she is helping only African Women. Perhaps Ms Oprah is a well I hate to say it..prejudice? Why is hers the only picture I see on that magazine staring back at me? I do not think she is all that any more.

because bitch... she is of African descent and she's helping her people, and besides they need it more!

You're STUPID....... Check your facts. Oprah has donated millions of dollars to USA charities and schools. Shame on you!

Why is a genuine act of kindness taken negatively. It doesn't matter who you give too, only that you give. Always remember: God is good, love is the answer and you are what you give.

Not that this reply will make a difference to such a judgemental and rude person, but it IS her money and she can do whatever she wants with it. At least SHE is doing something with what she has and not just keeping it all to herself. She also does plenty for people in the U.S. I don't know why people always have to make this a race issue, she does a lot of charitable things for EVERYONE not just Africans. It just happens that they need it more and people here in the U.S. might be poor, but you could take the poorest person here and they would seem like a millionare to the people in Africa.

Well let's talk about all of negative comments about Ms. Winfrey. first of all this Mississippi native, has given millions to schools and colleges in the USA. Please check your facts before commenting. One of my personal friends, recieved the very first Oprah Winfrey scholarships to Tennessee State University back which began back in 1987. This is her alma mater. Second, she has created numerous schoarships with her donations to both Spelman college and Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. Both of these scholarships have millions of dollars invested in endowments for these schools. These few that I have mention were all done well before she invested any of HER MONEY in HER School in Africa.

I admired her for along time and now am very disappointed in some choices she has made. Some of the choices do appear to be prejudice. The choice with the school her very public polictical choices and I am not to sure about the church thing she has started. She was the MOST prominent person and best candidate to be a role model but now another icon that may gotten crazy with power. I do not understand the term african american what about Italian, Korean or Irish Americans doesn't the term keep segregation alive?

She's selling them because her ass is too fat to fit in them. What a rich idiot. Please just go away, and take Rosie Odumbell with you.
warren Jul 29th 2008 11:58PM
YOU need to go away, supreme hater. It just kills you doesn't it? That a Black WOMAN has enough loot to buy your dirt poor a** a thousand times over! And that rat infested single-wide you live in. Oprah makes more more in 30 seconds, than you'll ever see in 3 lifetimes, but since you can't even count that high - it's really amoot point. (L**O**L)!!!

hey joey,
just to add to what christina said, she tried to open a school here and it was too much red tape, not to mention that she found that it would not do as much good and would not have been appreciated as much, to clear it up, the people in the u.s think they deserve it and the people in africa are grateful for the gift.

There are people in other countries that have even less than those in Africa. Fine, be generous and give to Africa, US and do include other countries as well. (I'm including all people, all skin and all religions). I think everyone should also take a road trip through the US - I think everyone would truly be shocked. Red tape? I think Oprah knows some influential people to pull the strings to get things done here..

and what will those girls do with their education? immigrate here thats a given ,they sure wont stay in africa,,the education will be worth squat in that aids plagued poverty stricken, Black run country

I asked the same thing to my wife, who loves Oprah. I found out she actually tried to open her school in America. The inner city parents where she inquired wouldn't agree to the uniforms or the amount of discipline she required to make it work, so she took it to south Africa, sadly. I saw her talk about this on her show more than once. I am not typically an Oprah fan, but I admire this effort. She really wants to help and put her money behind it. You made a really harsh comment, hope you reconsider.

STUPID BEING BLACK DOESN'T MAKE YOU AFRICAN AMERICAN. GO TO SCHOOL , LEARN SOME HISTORY. SHE MIGHT BE BLACK AMERICAN BUT SHE IS NOT AFRICAN AMERICAN....
