Amsterdam Castle, Estate of the Day

Today's home is a unique opportunity, the chance to own your own castle. Amsterdam Castle was built in 1875 by Issac Perry for the state of New York National Guard in Amsterdam, New York. It's now a 36,000 square foot private residence listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are 50 rooms, including a 10,000 sq ft ballroom, a rifle range, and a fallout shelter and billiard room. There are four turrets and three living wings and the castle also has a 10-car garage and onsite parking for 40. The castle has recently been used for movies and rented out for overnight stays as well as weddings (the ballroom rents for $990 for four hours). It is listed at $1.195 million.

WOW!!!!!!! The woodwork in this place is absolutely astounding to me. I'd pay a mill just for the woodwork. How did they keep the floors in such good shape? What a beautiful piece of property. I hope it goes to someone who really appreciates it's natural beauty.

HA! I grew up in Amsterdam, went to many events there as a teen. CYO basketball, dances, scout events. The steps up to the front door will kill ya...
OTOH, at the base of the front lawn, are a bar, a first class, Honest to God Italian restaurant, a fine set off bocce courts and it is all very near the frontage of the Mohawk River. The city has been crippled and dying since Urban Renewal stepped in to "help" in the 70's. The armory is on the south side of the river though, and it is a very tight knit section of town.
thanks for the flashback AOL..

THE ROOMS ARE VERY SMALL INSIDE. A 40 CAR PARKING LOT NOT NEEDED. TURN IT INTO A YARD OR A SMALL AMUSEMENT PARK. WHERE'S THE KITCHEN? IT'S PROBABLY AS SMALL AS THAT THIN BATHROOM. THE DECOR SUCKS. SOMEONE NEEDS SOMEONE IN THERE WITH SOME TASTES. THAT CANOPY BED NEEDS TO BE IN THE GARBAGE

The kitchen is large, just not visible, featuring an Aga stove from England and gorgeous soapstone counters. The decor has been featured on HGTV's ReZoned. It's all been restored with loc VOC paints.
