Amsterdam Castle, Estate of the Day

Today's home is a unique opportunity, the chance to own your own castle. Amsterdam Castle was built in 1875 by Issac Perry for the state of New York National Guard in Amsterdam, New York. It's now a 36,000 square foot private residence listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are 50 rooms, including a 10,000 sq ft ballroom, a rifle range, and a fallout shelter and billiard room. There are four turrets and three living wings and the castle also has a 10-car garage and onsite parking for 40. The castle has recently been used for movies and rented out for overnight stays as well as weddings (the ballroom rents for $990 for four hours). It is listed at $1.195 million.

I love castles but this one I just don't care for.To be a historic place I'm just not impressed.Inside pics are terrible,or maybe the inside is so un-interesting as the outside as to why no really goods ones were taken.

It was created to be a National Gaurd Armory...not a house...it is perfectly in keeping with the design of buildings of that sort for the period in which it was built.
OTOH, it has a massive ballroom (ex-drill room) and a rifle range (lol)...and it is well priced to be that big that near Saratoga...I suspect that the heating/cooling bills might be harsh...

Thats what I am wondering? Why so cheap for a 509 room house. Would the owners have the right to make it a total private residence. Could they knock down walls to enlarge a few rooms. Looks like some of the rooms are small. I think this place with some money could made into a cozy home.

When a place is put on the Historic Register, you can alter the inisde but not the outside of the building. They can do landscaping which this place really could use, but you would have to keep the exterior integrity of the building if you were to purchase it.

i totally agree with zoeyy. the price is like SUPER cheap for a castle.. with a little extra to redecorate and making the rooms larger, it could be worth it.. but i don't care for the 40 car parking lot... i'd rip that out and make it into a yard.. and i'd take out the rifle range and make it an chery range.. hmm..

WOW! I would love to live in a castle. Even though it's big, the rooms don't seem to be very big. But they look cozy.

Seems that National Guard Armories follow a castle like form in their early buildings. There is one on 15th Street in Troy, N.Y. that has two castle like turrets. It is near RPI.

It's a CASTLE come on ha ha... If someone buys it, I'll run the place for'em. I'll make it a NICE Bed n Breakfast or even a hotel with MANY accomodations... Someone back me up.

I don't really care for it, reguardless of style when built. No landscaping...no kitchen to see on a picture...price is great (I am a Realtor) for the area and amount of sq feet and land...but, I would think this would be a difficult sale...and the cost of heating and etc. would be through the roof!!!! YIKES
LeeAnn Jun 28th 2008 6:55PM
All I am worried about is how much closet space does it have? I need a place that has more closet space....LOL
Vivi Jun 28th 2008 7:01PM
No heating required. One lives in one room at a time. Body heat is all that is required.

Been to the one in Troy, NY....105th MP unit. Hoorah!
There is one in Oswego, NY too, that used to house the 145th Maint. Co. whom have served for our country over seas several times. Only the YMCA bought that one. They really are beautiful inside. Mysterious and intriguing. Please keep them to their orginal design. If I was rich, I would buy it.

I'll buy it for cash. I don't need a mortgage from bankrupt Americans. I am a sheikh of the kingdom of Alberta with lots of Dirty oil.
