Russian Tycoon to Launch Magazine for Snobs
Russian precious metals mogul Mikhail Prokhorov, ranked as the 24th richest man in the world with a $22 billion fortune, is set to launch a magazine called Snob for his fellow plutocrats. Prokhorov plans to invest $150 million in the venture, which will eventually include a website and TV station as well, Reuters reports. Andrei Shmarov, who's helming the project, says the magazine will be for "people who are successful and those who want to be successful."
Shmarov is at pains to point out that in Russia, "snob" isn't a pejorative term. "Snob to us means a person who is a 'self-made man', a person who has gained a right to snobbishness," he explains. "It's not pleasant to boast about your wealth when you have inherited it but when you have made it yourself, well it is still not very nice, but it is justified." At least in a country where a measly billion dollars won't even land you a spot on the rich list. Check out their competition below.

Is Modern Drunkard made up, and if not, where do I get it?
JPS Apr 24th 2008 10:49AM
Modern Drunkard is certainly not illusory -- merely a little tipsy: http://moderndrunkardmagazine.com/

I think there's plenty of "snob" related or directed magazines out there, no need for another. Usually wealth is something you keep to yourself... and for the record, even if I DID have 2 million in the bank, I would STILL buy a fake rolex rather than a real one!

Ah, yes, Snob magazine. Such a great idea. Yes, the Russian tycoon made his money from sheer hard work and brains and not having an in with the governing body in Russia.... Is it wrong to think that in a country that is barely out of its communist roots could suddenly spring this billionaire by accident? Most of the nouveau riche (there's a snob phrase just for him) in Russia made their money the old fashioned way: Crookedly. Is this snob one of em? Don't know, but the math surely ain't in his favor.

It must be nice to have that kind of money and buy lots of things you dont need. When the day before payday I am counting change just to get milk for the kids.

Yo Jay, it's only because you never could afford a real Rolex. If you had one, you'd see why we wear them, you loser.
Wes Apr 28th 2008 2:46AM
A real "winner" wouldn't resort to name-calling to make his point. Methinks you do protest a bit too much.

I think that he should start the magazine. There's a place for everyone in this world, including rich snobs!

its stupid to have snob magazines, no matter how much money i have i would never spend it on expensive jewelery or expensive clothes i save not squander people can be so dumb then they cry when they are broke
heidi Apr 28th 2008 12:46AM
people that seem to need expensive jewelery and clothes have nothing better to do with their lives, i have money too but i spend it on my children for homes ,cars and stuff like that we go on vacation a few times a year and relax at home and invest we give to poor people, people who need it and wont abuse it that is what people with money should do help other american people give to animal charities and other charities greed gets you nowhere in life helping others makes you feel good

Dear Allison,
we are unsure if he truely can't afford a Rolex or just preferres to be practical. The point being, I dont need to prove to anyone that I'm wealthy, it's what you do with your wealth that matters. I am confident with who I am and I need not exploit my extravagance. I am quality without quantity, I dont need FUBU.
