Prepare for the $35 Movie Ticket

It seems like the price of movie tickets is getting ever more expensive, but would you be willing to pay even more if it meant luxury amenities like plush reserved seating with waiter service and upscale food and drink options? I would! At least sometimes anyway. It would totally make going to a movie feel more like going to a "show."
Village Roadshow Gold Class Cinemas is opening a luxury movie theater later this year in Chicago that will offer just those amenities, along with others like seating limited to 40 people and special parking privileges, for ticket prices of just $35 each.
That's pretty steep for a movie, but they're not expecting that to deter the luxury crowd -- plans are already in the works for 20+ more Gold Class Cinemas around the country by 2010.

By 2010 "regular" tickets will be $30.75, so $35 will be a bargain!

The chain is also opening a theater in Redmond, WA this fall, according to the Seattle Times: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/eastsidenews/2004306611_movietheater26e.html

In Mexico we've got those kind of theaters since 2004, called Cinepolis VIP. You can get gourmet foods, drinks, and even a beer, whisky and sushi. Waiters get your orders. You choose your seats via touchscreen. Prices range from 12 to 15 usd, depending the city you live in. Now they have a sweepstakes where you can win a Porsche Boxster. Check out: http://www.cinepolisvip.com.mx/

I lived in Australia last year and they had these everywhere! Great value for your money if you don't own a home cinema.. Very comfy seats, almost too comfortable they make you wanna sleep, good food and butler service. Oh and hopefully you chose to go see a good movie! I give it two thumbs up!

And here I thought the Camera Cinema's (San Jose, CA) 10 movies for $50 rising to $60 was expensive! ;)

Put that price with mediocre movies, and you wonder why theaters are in trouble. When it starts getting that expensive, I and other families will go to DVD, pay per view, and 'find some other place'.

So does that mean we get to be distracted by listening to people calling for "service" then listen to them place their order and then get to watch the wait help walk down the aisles, between the rows, or will they just give the outside person a nudge and ask them to "pass it down".
I say if you can't handle sitting for an hour and a half without getting waited on every five seconds, stay home.

Sure. I'd pay it but only if it means NO KIDS.

$35 to go see a MOVIE?!?! I don't think so. I'd MUCH rather sit in the comfort of my own home, just as I do now...

I think you are missing the whole point. They offer things you can't get at home.

Spend your money on a big screen TV and fancy furniture invite your friends over and save a bundle! Why go to a movie theatre they are full of germs I don't care how much you spend they will never clean the place good enough. UGH! I hate going to them even if it was for free and I hate the thought I just made someone mega money for watching an average film with average talent. Stay home and watch it on your big screen

If they will block cell phones, install a no kids policy, show GOOD movies and patrol the aisles to stop the loudmouth behind from talking all through the show, then it might be worth it. Personally I prefer to just buy the DVD and watch it on my big screen TV.

I would never pay $35.00 to see a movie. The movies aren't that good to begin with and I wonder how they can keep the lounge seating clean and free from head lice, body lice, food crumbs and germs of all sorts? What about loud neighbors or some lovers wanting to sit really close together(like on one seat panting like dogs in heat.)
They can't even make decent popcorn and drinks at most theatres- how will they deliver gourmet foods? Oh yes, and where are they gonna get the help? Some pimply faced teenager for tips is going to be your waiter- no thanks. I choose Netflixs.

Lessee - for the price of 10 dates (you're not going to the movies ALONE), you could get a mid-priced video projector, and a Blu-Ray Player (those prices are going tostart dropping), a blank wall, and you've got your own sofa, your own beverages (soda, beer wine, champagne), and no one talking, walking in front of you, snoring(!), and the security of knowing who sat in that seat before you!
Theaters like that will only PROMTE cocooning!

NO WAY !
ginnie Mar 28th 2008 3:20PM
this wont last long. i think there is a lot of cleaning to be done and it wont due to not having enough help. i see some of the hotels in atlantic city casinos that the rooms are not so clean.
dog Mar 28th 2008 3:25PM
No, I will put the 35 bucks in my gas tank, it might get me to the block buster to buy the movie for 7.99 two months later,, I can wait.

Good grief. Our favorite theater here in small-town America offers movies for $3 a pop. They are show in an intimate, old-fashioned theater with armchairs, sofas and tables. You can order food and drinks, and the Wednesday night special is burger, beer (micro-brewery) and movie for $10. And it isn't a MickyDs-style burger, either.
Don't think I'll be switching to that Chicago experience anytime soon.

I read.
