Matthew McConaughey's Malibu Mess

For a little while, frequently bare-chested romantic comedy star Matthew McConaughey has been living the real estate-less life in California. McConaughey sold off his three-lot Hollywood Hills compound toward the end of 2006 and then was spending most of his time in a couple of Airstream trailers in Malibu. He also still owns a 1.600-acre ranch in Texas. But last fall, McConaughey, who recently announced that his model girlfriend Camilla Alves is pregnant with their child, purchased a $10 million property in Malibu. The property is a little over an acre and includes a four-bedroom home that was built in 1949. When the sale was announced in November, Big Time Listings mentioned that the 3,550-square-foot home has had some celebrity owners in the past such as Richard Page, the lead singer of the 1980s band Mr. Mister (which had the popular songs 'Broken Wings' and 'Kyrie') who sold the house in 1996 to its most recent owner for $1,260,000. As TMZ shows in a video on their website construction has begun on the home, expanding the home which is located on a deep lot just a few houses away from the ocean.
Matthew McConaughey is far from the first celebrity to spend a lot of money on a home that needs a lot of work or may even be a tear down. Our gallery below includes a few more examples of recently multi-million dollar purchases bought for the land more than the home.

How goofy can any human being be? there are numerous people who are completely homeless and on starvation, and one human being spends this kind of money on a parcel of land that is bound to be a part of the ocean floor soon? A person can only occupy a certain amount of space...regardless of where they might be. This is stupid on behalf of anyone who would take part in it!!! Get Real, Simplicity is the key to all things material.

Honestly guys, I know what he did wasn't great, but you don't know what it is like to be famous, and im not saying i do eaither! But seriously, we all do stupid things! I do!
Gina Feb 16th 2008 10:19PM
This is really appalling. The rich and the famous have nothing better to do with their money than to buy and tear down old, expensive homes....for even more gluttonous, newer, expensive homes??? Then, they have the nerve to get on their soapboxes to spew about what the government does and doesn't do for people...but what about them?? They have more money than anyone...if they pooled some of it...to do the most good. But, then again, that would mean giving up one of their many mansions, etc. What a bunch of hypocrites...what a bunch of sickening, gluttonous, greedy pigs!!!!

Rich people got it, so they flaunt it....the better the home and location, the more they seem to think it shows their worth. They are so detached from "a normal life" that they could not conceive living in areas that are below the million dollar mark.
And, it all depends on what they do with the mega bucks they have. Only spend it on themselves and the luxuries it all buys, or do they also spread it around and do some good with their millions. That's what counts the most, and there are some mega million people out there who do share the wealth and help others. GOD BLESS THEM!!!!!

Jean, although your personal sentiments are admirable, they are misplaced for a free society. Communist and socialists decided things like how much space you get to occupy. Even thought liberals would love to dictate such things to us, I prefer a free society, where a person is free to be as ignorant as they want to be.
Ann Feb 16th 2008 4:51PM
Very well said, Akhir!!! This is a free country, thanks to our fore fathers and our military! The rich have the freedom to spend their hard earned dollars in any way they want!!
By the way Matthew has spend many dollars and endless hours helping people damamged in the wake of Katrina!

Jean...sounds like a case of jealousy to me...yes there are numerous pepole who are homeless and starving..but explain to me exactly how it is Mr. McConaughey's fault these people are in the situation they are in?? The way I see it he is helpin people from being in that situation..heres how the trickle down affect works...He bought a house which employed a Realestate agent..maybe even two(one for the buyer and seller)..a realesate lawyer..maybe even two(one for the buyer and seller)and then you have the contractors..general building, elctrical, plumbing, heating\AC, roofer, landscaper, painter, flooring, drywall, city inspectors, that have to inspect it all, so far that 13 people who have jobs due to one man...now if you really want to broden the spectrum..think of the jobs that are supported by the contractors who had to go to the supply houses and get materials to do their job, anf the accountants they use to pay their emplaoyees..and the taxes the "privileged" like Mr. McConaughey pay..those taxes pay for more county jobs....so before you critize the rich..just remember..if it were not for the rich..you wouldnt have a job..whens the last time you worked for a poor man?

It seems such a waste to tear down a perfectly good house, especially since so many people are struggling to make payments on far more modest homes. Maybe it's time for us ordinary people to stop wasting our money on these celebrities and their movies and music, and invest it in OUR homes so we don't foreclose on our homes. Fortunately for me, there have been few movies and music albums released in the last twenty or so years worth spending money on.

There is an alternative to "tear downs" if you know of anyone anywhere in the country, even the rich and famous, that want to tear down a house then write, call or walk up to them and tell them to give the houses to The Benefactor Project instead. We create jobs by partially dismantling unwanted houses moving them and rebuilding them as houses. We also GIVE (not sell) houses to people willing to work their way out of poverty. www.thebenefactorproject.com

Good for him. Its his money and he do what the hell he wants with it. The hell with charities.

Sounds like Gina is one jealous welfare person. Why should one person feel guilty about someone else's drug, wine, or lazy problem. But, keep sitting there on your a-- and complaining. Obama or Hillary will take care of you.

Yeah, but that is cut-rate real estate.
Just south of here in Briny Breezes single wide trailer lots sell for $1 miilion each, if you can find someone that will sell.
It is much nicer here on my estate just north of Briny Breezes.
My home is not for sale.
