Prince Charles' Yacht Vacation

Prince Charles has said before that he's committed to the environment and to reducing his personal carbon footprint on the world, and for his latest trip it seems he's keeping to that promise. Next month he and his wife Camila are planning to sail around the Caribbean on the Leander, a 246 ft luxury yacht, for an 11 day trip that sounds like a mix of business and pleasure. The voyage will have them skipping around to several different locations and officials say that sailing in the yacht will result in reduced costs and reduced carbon emissions compared to having the couple fly each step instead.
The yacht, with huge richly decorated rooms and features like a sauna and hot tub, looks like a vacation in and of itself! And it is available for private charter -- if you've got the dough.

Hard to think of yachting as a green activity. That's like saying I'm taking the Phantom instead of the Ferrari because it emits 10% less carbon.

Yeah, this is weird--the Queen had to give up Britannia because of the cost and the environmental impact, how is this motoryacht different? If it were a sailboat, that would be different.
diane Feb 13th 2008 4:47PM
yeah, i don't think i'd want to fly either.

The Leander only cost $70K to fill up

Charles and Seabisquit have some rotten nerve, describing this self-indulgent 5-star vacation cruise, at the hard-pressed UK taxpayers' expense, as good for the envirnment. Not only does this floating albatross use up a ton of energy for just their pleasure, but everywhere they go, taxpayers will have to pay for extra security, fancy food and all the finery the Royal Parasites feel they're entitled to.

Hi, Pat!
Your "Seabisquit" comment literally had me laughing off my chair this morning. Thanks so much! You have a great sense of humor. My name for her is Camilla Toilet-Bowls.
Happy Valentine's Day. Jack

What exactly are they on vacation from?
Bob Feb 13th 2008 4:53PM
Not bad for being on welfare.

The British Government, no longer willing to pay for the upkeep of HMY Britannia, decommissioned the ship in 1997. Between 1953 and 1997, the Queen and other members of the Royal Family made 696 foreign visits and 272 visits in British waters on Britannia. Since 1992, such visits have been undertaken by air. Now, the Royal family is a target because they fly. In an effort to be more environmentally responsible, the Prince of Wales opted to use a ship rather than a plane to complete this particular tour. I suppose all that's left now, is to expect them to make the tour by row boat and to pack a sack lunch should they wish to eat along the way.

Last I checked ships use a tremendous amount of fuel, which in turn yields a tremendous amount of emissions. Where are the sails on ship that would really have an enviromental impact. Nowhere!!! Give me a break. How stuoid do they think people are? Oh goody take the yacht it will save our planet.

I DO'NT KNOW WHY THEY'RE PRINCESS AND QUEENS , IT'S NOT LIKE IF THEY'RE PRETTY OR SOMETHING . LOOK AT CHARLES (BIGGEST EARS IN ENGLAND).
Gloria Feb 13th 2008 5:44PM
Took the tour of pictures - God the decor on this thing is fugly! But then.....look who's going to be the guests!
Thinkpeople Feb 13th 2008 6:07PM
I agree with 'Bob', they are Royal Welfare recipients. When will the people of England 'move ahead' in life and get rid of them. Just think of the money they can have in their pockets vs. Charles having money in his pockets... Oh, I bet I'll hear back from the loyalists, you know 'God save the Queen' and all that crap.. Why do you think all the british entertainers have homes in the US, so they don't have to pay the 'ROYAL TAX"!!!
michael Feb 13th 2008 7:09PM
The Royal family's costs to the Nation are more than offset by revenues from tourism, they are also taxed and last but not least they do not own the Royal Palaces, Jewels, Art collection etc etc, the People do. In the case of Prince Charles his upkeep is more than met by revenue from the Duchy of Cornwall estates. Sail on
Lynne Feb 13th 2008 6:11PM
I wonder what Charles would catch if he decided to go fishing and use Camilla as bait... but her in the water would hardly be considered ocean friendly.
Skylarstar Feb 13th 2008 6:19PM
Yeah, so much for protecting the environment. Sigh, the rich unfortuantely will always be with us. Maybe in his next life Prince Charles will come back as a Polar Bear and then he will finally become extinct.

How many destroyers, aircraft carriers and subs will be in escort? Get real!
Jeannie Feb 13th 2008 6:22PM
I agree, the decorating sucks...looks like hotel (thin) bedspreads, the main room has southwest decor- ? what a letdown, after the first pic from the outside of the yacht
DAN Feb 13th 2008 8:30PM
HOPEFULLY THEY WILL BE BOARDED BY PIRATES AND THROWN OVERBOARD
Chanesaw Feb 13th 2008 11:25PM
I wouldn't set foot on this toad boat. It is the ugliest appointed vessel I have ever seen. It must have been decorated and furnished under the direction of the Sugar Plum Fairy. UGH!!
