Renoir's Paris Home, Estate of the Day

The Parisian neighborhood of Montmatre has a rich history in the arts. The hilly area was once home to Pablo Picasso, Van Gogh and others including Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. His home Château des Brouillards (the home of the mists) is a stone townhouse ringed by gardens and terraces. The four-floor house was also the childhood home of filmmaker Jean Renoir, the painter's second son. The home has a front garden and a 1,200-square-foot interior garden as well as a concierge apartment.

Last year, Susan Bell, writing for the Sunday Times, took a tour of the home and describes it as having a gothic flavor, which is enhanced by the black and cream stone-flagged floors that came originally from Notre Dame cathedral. There are two dark oak doors from a 17th-century confessional that separate the master bedroom from the hallway and study. THe master bedroom has a terrace, study and en-suite bathroom. The balcony has a view of the Moulin de la Galette, the 19th-century dance garden that inspired Renoir's Le Bal au Moulin de la Galette. It might be time for a renovation though, the current owner's family has held the property for about half a century and hasn't done changed the interior. Perhaps this is why the home has been on the market for over a year now. It is currently listed at €3.75 million (about $5.5 million), down from €4.5 million.
