Jay-Z recently stepped down as the head of Def Jam records, perhaps because he's got a new project, a chain of five-star hotels. Various sources are reporting that he
recently paid $66 million for a piece of land in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood in order to create the first of his new J Hotels. Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, already as a clothing line (Rocawear) as well as his own bar chain, the 40/40 Club (he opened the Las Vegas 40/40 Club over New Year's) so this deal seems more secure than some of the others we've seen, such as Nicky Hilton's attempt at the hotel business.

I've seen several entries talk about giving people jobs. Let's see..Who's going to staff this beautiful hotel? snails? No! This will bring 1000s of jobs into the city. I for one would rather read about Jay Z and the good things he is doing than waste anymore time on the worthless antics of other young stars.

You are so right Just B. How do you know the rich don't give to charity? Do the people whining about how the rich spend their money give to charity? that is what they should be concerned with. Not someone else's money.

Why are we so quick to tell someone else what they should do with their money, regardless of how much they have?
Worry about your spending and your giving... if you do not like what a celeb does with their money stop watching their shows and listening to their music.

Once a chump, always a chump. Just gotta hire the right people to do your dirty work. How about a motel in Newark that rents by the hour? Wannabes do not impress.

That's real good, a new hotel chain, and I can imagine the elevator music at this chain, RAP CRAP that he produces. It isn't enough that we have to see all this crotch grabbing in Rap Vodeo's, they will most likely be seen in these hotels. I hope that this projects fails?

We do not know what they do with their money. They may give away more than we know. I know of some who give to focusas.com to help parents. Perahps they also wotk in soup kitchens and shelters too.

Go brother, go! That's the advantage of having a lot of money. You can take risks and branch out and take on all kinds of business ventures! What a blessing.

Good. I hope ALL the Rappers decide to stay at his hotel chain and let them totally destroy the property instead of the Four Seasons, Hiltons, Marriotts and all the other hotel chains that have taken that kind of abuse for years. I hope the first one he opens is in Las Vegas. At the last major basketball event in Vegas, a city wide " gangsta" party ensued as hundreds of rappers and their obnoxious entourages descended on the city. The people I know in the hotel business said they treated the staff members like dirt, destroyed the rooms and NEVER TIPPED for services. It's not so much the stars themselves though they can be arrogant a--holes. It's those loser friends of theirs who think because they tag along with famous people that they should be treated like THEY are famous too. When are these morons going to WAKE UP and realize that they are NOTHING but regular old losers when they aren't standing next to a famous person? And they deserve no more respect, service or attention than the maid, doorman, valet, waiter front desk clerk that they are busy being rude too? When will they finally get that the minute they break contact or fall out of favor with their " famous friend", they will go right back to their old job at the In and Out burger or the car wash? These idiots should be finishing school and getting college degrees so they can support themselves when their days as a groupie are over. And that is all they are- GROUPIES.
Good luck with that Hotel endevour Jay Z. I hope you hire ACTUAL hotel experts and not another idiot friend who thinks they can do the job because they have stayed at a hotel before. Try hiring people who went to college and earned their degrees in Hotel Management.

To all of you cynics out there what Mr. Carter should do is stand on the street corner and give $100.00 to all the poor people until he reaches $66million which will give a short moment of happiness in their lives, or he could invest in creating jobs for contractors, vendors, suppliers and laborers. These jobs are needed to support families for the long term not for the moment and all the while building dignity and pride for the underemployed and the unemployed knowing they have earned their living and it was not just given to them. One last thing it is said if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem, remember it doesn't take millions to make a different so before any of you start to bad mouth others make sure you are out there as a Big Brother, Big Sister, reader to the blind etc. John F Kennedy once said "ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country" and your country starts right in your community.

To all of those who criticize Jay-Z for "not giving to charity": Maybe he's just got that much money that he can give to charity and still build hotels. His music sells like hotcakes!
RAMONE Jan 7th 2008 4:33PM
Do hotcakes really sell? How about making a selling reference that isn't two hundred years old.
BTW Jay-Z owns a tiny part of the Nets. People like to imagine that he owns a lot of the franchise, but that is all BS myth. The Principal Owner is Bruce Ratner and Forest City Enterprises. They are a 6 Billion Dollar company and they allowed Jay Z to buy a small stake in the Nets franchise.

IT WILL NOT WORK.
BignRich Jan 7th 2008 1:34PM
Ditto on the "providing jobs". I have owned 17 hotels/motels but only have two now. I love and appreciate my employees and could not survive without them. Regarding "parties". Customers often have parties at my establishment. Party money is not wasted. It also provides numerous jobs.
Black and Knows Better Jan 7th 2008 1:45PM
THAT is one hotel chain I'll be avoiding. Too many Brothas in one place makes for riots when not properly supervised by the police. And I am not being a racist. I am a black woman. Been there, done that.

Its funny you'd think he'd open up a hotel in Harlem or another area that needs the money...not Chelsea which is already outragious in price

Because goofball...if you build a hotel, you have to put it where people WANT to go or it doesn't make any money.
