Jay-Z recently stepped down as the head of Def Jam records, perhaps because he's got a new project, a chain of five-star hotels. Various sources are reporting that he recently paid $66 million for a piece of land in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood in order to create the first of his new J Hotels. Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, already as a clothing line (Rocawear) as well as his own bar chain, the 40/40 Club (he opened the Las Vegas 40/40 Club over New Year's) so this deal seems more secure than some of the others we've seen, such as Nicky Hilton's attempt at the hotel business.Jay-Z Plans J Hotels

Why do people always say " I wish the rich gave to charity" or "why do we care about how so and so spends their money" on LUXIST? A LUXURY goods blog. We come here to read about big spending. Don't waste your breath asking who cares, just don't read it... check out thehungersite.com and do something about some "real" problems. I come here to read about 40k bottles of Dom, so does everybody else. You're the only one who is looking for info on "real" problems.

touche!! it is about time we stopped obsessing with that less then 1% of the population that has unlimited spending ability and start worrying about the other 99% who have problems just getting health care, buying gas and paying their mortgage!!

I wish I had that much money to give to charity. I wish the rich had big generous hearts instead of spending millions on a party.

You don't know what kind of charitable contributions Jay-Z or any other celeb makes. Perhaps they keep it private, perhaps you just aren't well versed enough to know about their philanthropy.
Jay-z had a big "Water in Africa" thing about a year ago though, the U.N. recognized him for it. Installed a few wells, MTV documentary, raised international awareness. How many soup kitchen hours did you clock in ’07?
This article doesn’t even mention a party. Do you just pop into articles and bemoan the stingy hard partying rich for kicks?

America is a capitalist country where
even a kid from the ghetto can survive,
thrive and build his own hotel chain. If
you want to change the world either become a politician, uber-wealthy or
give people jobs. Otherwise, sit back and
watch while others do the work!

thank you Just B. ask yourself what do you have that's luxury to others and are you willing to give it up. we give as Americans more money to charities then most countries and so far as much as we give people are still starving. so I presume that those who keep saying give to charity don't have cell phones, name brand items, a nice car, your children don't waste nor have all those unnecessary things that kids have (vid games, ipods). I bet no one in your poorest neighborhoods know of you to donate all your worldly possession or do you and you just don't brag as Jay Z and others don't. im all for giving to charity but why should one have to deprive themselves to do so.

Congrats to Jay-Z. Hell, if I was him I would prosper as much as I could in this lifetime. I believe he helps the less fortunate and that's why he continues to be blessed in what he does. Other races get richer. They do it everyday, don't they and we never say anything about it because it's the "Norm". When Jay-Z builds that hotel, I hope I can afford to stay there one night because I will be there to support this Black Brother!!
JAY-Z, I GIVE YOU RESPECT HERE IN TEXAS !!
"JOY" IN TEXAS

Amen, I am so happy to see young black men doing something beside going to jail. Build that hotel Jay Z and I'll be there. I love to take my mini-vacations and check into a nice hotel. How pleasing it would be to this older African-American lady to know that I was relaxing in a hotel owned by an African American for a change. God Bless You all
