Earlier this week I came across the
"80 things to watch in 2008" list from advertising agency JWT. It's is an interesting take on what might be hot next year. Some of the things make easy sense like actress Keira Knightley who is currently on the big screen in "Atonement," Beijing in 2008 (the upcoming Olympics will be held there), and various things eco (eco-fatigue, blue as the new green, green weddings and carbon tax) all made the list. For luxspotters, there are a couple interesting notes such as the rise of hot fashion names Phillip Lim and Vena Cava, the humbling of the hedge fund manager and skiing in unique spots like Kashmir, Japan and Greenland. As someone who follows the wine and spirits world I was struck by number 69 on the list: tequila is the new wine. It's an ambitious statement but I'm not sure I buy it. First of all, tequila production has grown but it is in no way poised to take wine which is produced all around the world. And while people are starting to have an increased appreciation for handcrafted and artisanal tequilas, it's nothing even close to the world of wine connoisseurship. Now, tequila is the new vodka, and that I'll believe.

Tequila is definitely not the new wine, I agree. Perhaps the new vodka, but vodka (and rum) seem to lend themselves to much more experimentation - it's a lot easier to add flavors, while tequila tends to dominate a mix.
What else does tequila go with besides citrus flavors?

I dated a woman for a while that at times would drink Tequila. I had to get away from her because she was one nasty Bit#h when drinking that.

A fine tequila doesn't have to be mixed with anything! Certainly, one would not destroy a reposado or anejo by dashing it with a bunch of sugary mixers. Save that treatment for the "golds." Incidentally, tequila gold is merely white (blanco) with caramel coloring added. Unfortunately, the coloring/flavoring does nothing to enchance the taste, and actually degrades it. The blancos are far superior, contrary to common belief. They are fragrant and smooth, pure and unadulterated. Fine, aged tequilas (reposados & anejos) are just as varied and complex as any cognac and should be savored and enjoyed in snifters!

How about a Tequila Mary which is also sometimes called a Bloody Maria?

tequilla can't be the new wine, because you can't drink a glass of tequilla with your meal without getting blasted. it can be the new vodka, but i doubt that will come to pass either, because crazy flavors are what makes the martini so popular.

I agree with you cook. Teguila may not be the new wine, but it is a drink that deserves respect. Approximately two years ago, a bartender introduced me to a "tequila neat." It was basically a double shot of Patron in a snifter. It is now my drink of choice. From Cuervo to Don Julio and so forth. I love tequila. I saw a show on the travel channel that explained that in Mexico, Tequila is almost always sipped and not done in shots. When it's sipped (in moderation), there is a much smaller chance of ending up on cops or Girls/Guys Gone Wild. Give it a try.
