Perry Street Triplex, Estate of the Day

I mentioned this one on Sunday as part of the real estate round-up but Curbed's post on it helped me decided that the listing pictures are worth a post of their own. The Wall Street Journal's Private Properties column first reported that Sun Microsystems co-founder Bill Joy put his triplex in the 176 Perry Street building designed by Richard Meier on the market. Joy bought the condo for $17.57 million and is now asking $40 million for the 11,000-square-foot home. The unit is the largest in the building and takes up the eighth, ninth and 10th floors. There are expansive views of the Hudson River from many rooms include the huge double-height living room. The home includes a gourmet kitchen, large dining room, a huge recreation room and a small wine cellar. There are five bedrooms total including a master bedroom with an exercise area, bath, sauna and dressing areas. Each floor has a terrace and the most amazing feature of the home is the dramatic swirled staircase. The home is a masterpiece of blinding white and linear space but is it livable? It seems more like incredibly chic office space.

Wow, that's beautiful...and totally sterile. Doesn't much feel like a "home"

Now THIS is worthy of the title "Estate of the Day".
It's been a very loonnngggg time between decent posts. I remember there was a concept flying around for a triplex at 176 Perry a few years ago and this is obviously the outcome.
I think Nicole Kidman sold her apartment in this building not too long ago. It was a well kept secret and was never lived in.
It is very stark in this state but the potential is enormous. How I would love to get my hands on this beauty. I think I need to go lay down for a minute. The thought of that makes me feel a little dizzy.

Interesting--I thought it was in Miami, it's so Miami Vice, late 80s cool. Also, who puts only one sink in a kitchen anymore? And the wine room shows no magnum storage. And are there any blinds or shades? I'm all for voyeurism, but some privacy is necessary.

If you look at the plans, you'll notice there is a secondary kitchen off the main kitchen. This back of house area also includes a wet bar which is where you'll find another large sink and plenty of space for dishes and other things you want out of sight. Very practical and well thought out but you wouldn't expect any less when you consider Meier was not only the architect behind the building itself but also the man responsible for designing the interior for the apartment too. It was originally three separate full floor apartments. When these three where purchased to become one, the owner bought Meier back to oversee the conversion.
