There's no doubt that every day something new is being invented and developed in the way of technology, but that doesn't mean industry always keeps up. And although some hotels are cutting edge, as a general rule the hotel industry as a whole has been fairly slow to keep up with the latest technological trends.
That is starting to change, but it's not a fast process. More and more hotels are finding that what people want, namely HD TV and high-speed internet access, is what they're going to have to offer in order to stay competitive. Independently owned hotels are leading the charge, but big chains aren't far behind. Do you make decisions on where to stay based on what high-tech perks the hotel offers?

I will only stay at a hotel that has WiFi in the rooms. I'm self-employed, so I need to be able to be in contact regardless of where I'm at.

high speed internet is a must, However wifi is less desirable as cat 5 directly in the room. The fact of the matter is that whenever i go to a high end hotel that states they have highspeed wifi through out the hotel the signal in my room is poor or non existent. If i want wifi i use my own router easy as pie.

I suppose for some, travel involves sacrifices, but if you're staying at a Ritz-Carlton-level hotel, not having a DVR is a big sacrifice, as well as not having unmetered access to movies.
Also, those sign-in pages on most hotel networks really disrupt the use of certain kinds of dynamic websites such as Google Mail.
Of course, why would the hotels take such things in to consideration? They seem to think that charging $10 for a 50-cent service is their main path to profits.

If I'm staying in a hotel, wifi is definitely on the menu. It's a definite necessity in this day and age. You have to stay on the cutting edge to compete.

I really resent it when I pay a lot of money for a high-end hotel and then they charge a fee on top of that for internet usage. The cheaper hotels all offer it as a perk for free! Makes no sense other than gauging the customer... Often I can get onto their wifi in the lobby but it's certainly inconvenient.
