Bellapais, Estate of the Day

George Washington slept here. Well, not actually but the land this estate sits was once part of George Washington's River Farm. The 25-acre estate has river views and is the largest remaining private estate on the Potomac. The home was originally built during the mid 19th century and then expanded over time. In 2001, it had a complete renovation. The stately brick home has six bedrooms. Not a lot of interior pics on this one but it seems like a nicely kept elegant home. It is listed at $9.75 million. After the jump, a country home for a senator perhaps?

Ah, Bellapais. It has been on the market for years.
Seriously, years (just shy of 4 yrs!) and hasn't had any takers. It was originally listed in the low teens and the price has reacted to the lack of demand. You'd think it was sitting on nuclear waste with the lack of demand while tons of homes of vastly less history, character and land have sold for much more in McLean, VA. Although that is a key part of it - this part of Alexandria is not exactly as Tony as other areas and this accordingly suffers for it.
Money has been invested to spruce the interior up as I don't recall the floors being so vibrant when it was originally listed.

Don't get me wrong...this is a great looking property. But where did the statement that this is the largest remaining private estate on the Potomac come from? There are many much larger private estates off of the Potomac, some actually owned by descendants of the Washington family. It's certainly rare for a home like this to come up for sale, though.

What a great piece of property and home.
