Mel Gibson's Old Mill Farm, Estate of the Day

I first mentioned this listing on Sunday. The esteemed Braden Keil of the NY Post broke the story that Mel Gibson has put his Greenwich, Conn. home on the market. The listing with photos just went live today so I wanted to bring you the pictures of why this home just might be worth the $39.5 million asking price. As commenter Spectacular Bid noted on my last post about this house, Old Mill Farm is a design by architect Charles Lewis Bowman built in 1926 for his horse lover client, G.L. Ohrstrom. The home is one of the last great manor homes in Greenwich and is significant not just for the architecture but for the fact that it has 77 acres of land.
The home itself is an Elizabethan-inspired Tudor mansion of 15,800 square feet and the property has 15 bedrooms and 18 bathrooms total. The jaw-dropping room of the place is the great hall which has a 40-foot cathedral ceiling with a stone minstrel's gallery, walk-in fireplace and leaded glass ceilings. The grounds, which were done by landscape designer James Doyle, include formal gardens and a maze. There is also a terrace pool, tennis court, greenhouse, stable, staff houses, log cabin and a pond on the property. For your $39.5 million you really do get a chance to slip into a whole other world. After the jump, imagine the movie Mel could have made here.

Here's an Idea Mr.Gibson. This unique property is certainly historical, and it is really to big for one family to live in unless their about 15-30 people in volume. How about making it a bed and breakfast for celebrities, I mean everything is already there. This property would be an awesome get away for the conservative wealthy. If offers exclusive privacy and tons of history. 77 acres is an island.Great idea huh? Just something to think about!!!! That is certainly what I would do. Thanks for making the Passion of the Christ by the way.

Absolutely splendid! Appears to be such a warm place, to be so big. Would love to live there, myself, if just for a day. For the experience and feel of the home and gardens. Such a lovely space.

mel gibson is a washed up old actor. his last few movies have been flops and he is a nobody in hollywood anymore plus he is a anti semite just like his father. Even though he might live in such beautiful surroundings his insides are evil and ugly, hope he takes his ass back down under.

GORGEOUS home. Thanks for the history, #3. Do agree that the landscaping could have been better, particularly in the maze. Needed a bit of a trim. If Mr. Gibson likes, I could come snap photos of the entire estate for real estate purposes (I might need to stay there for a month or so to do a throrough job). Did wonder if the prejudiced Mr. Gibson's estate was built or enhanced by any persons who he'd find objectionable, due to their heritage. Shallow views of his, unfortunately. Wish I could stay there for a bit of time. Wouldn't it be dreamy?

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL AND ELEGANT HAVEN; I TRULY ADMIRED THE ARCHITECTURE AND GARDENS, THE ROOM I LOVED THE MOST WAS THE FORMAL DINING ROOM AND THAT BEAUTIFUL LONG TABLE THAT CAN SIT PLENTY OF RELATIVES OR GUESTS, I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED A LONG AND BEAUTIFUL TABLE TO SIT AS MANY FRIENDS, RELATIVES AS YOU CAN, WHAT A DREAM HOME.....IF IT DOES NOT SELL IF WOULD MAKE A GREAT MUSEUM OF THE THIS GORGEOUS STRUCTURE OF THE TURN OF THE CENTURY.

This is probably one of the most beautiful estates I have ever seen listed from anywhere. How lovely.
Sarah Jul 19th 2007 11:36PM
I agree with 17. The American Red Cross, and the Girl Scouts are my two favorites for supporting fat cats. The house is a dream, and sadly that is the only place I will see it.

I will be the first to tell anyone that I am not perfect, by FAR. But, for folks to keep on putting Mr. Gibson down for a mistake he made years ago, there's a problem. NONE of us are without fault. Not one. I can't imagine living in a place like this...I will never see it. But, at the same time, we have no idea what it's like to be an actor...what all it entails in order to be successful. Too, anyone, including myself, that has said anything in reference to another's differences, (how many of us have been in an argument about religion before???), are just as guilty as him. We just didn't get caught. My hat is off to him, especially for putting his neck on the line for "The Passion of the Christ." It tickled me to see him succeed with it, when all of Hollywood seemed to want him to fail. Keep up the good work.

I hope Mel does not have a problem if a Jew or Gay couple want to buy his house. You know he feels that these groups are taking over the world. I really hope a Jewish Gay couple with adopted black and latin children buy it. He'll take their money but not give them any respect. Money talks!!!!!

I am from Connecticut and I can tell you that there are many gorgeous homes like this in the Greenwich area. It's where the Donald Trumps and Paul Newman's of the world live. If you have never seen the northeast, you should go before you die. It is probably one of the most beautiful areas of this country...especially Connecticut, Vermont, and Maine. Breathtaking. And as for this house, I couldn't imagine in my wildest dreams...it is beyond words. I can't imagine why he'd sell it...but...I guess he can because he probably has 7 houses like this scattered throughout the world. Must be nice....well, actually, it's a bit glutonous for one person to have so much and others to have nothing. Oh well....
Gina Jul 19th 2007 11:57PM
And, just think...people make all that money being someone they are not. If you really stop and think about it...it's very strange.

IT IS TRULY AN AWESOME EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN REAL ESTATE, AND IT WOULD BE A WONDERFUL PLACE TO RAISE A FAMILY....
BJ List Jul 20th 2007 12:17AM
This is truly a beautiful home that rests on land that seems to call to anyone that would like to have it. Years ago I would have loved to live in a place such as this, but now I have aged, my children are grown and married with familes of their own. All my immediate family is gone, Cousins, aunts, uncles, and dear friends. So at this time in my life I would just like to have a small 2 bedroom ranch on a medium size lot. That would get me out of this Senior Building I now live in, which by the way is not the best surrounding. People pass away everyday. Can be very depressing. Anyway the person who is able to get this home I have nothing but good wishes to offer to you and your family. If you can afford it then you derserve it. God Bless and good luck to Mel Gibson on selling it. BLrags@aol.com

The exrerior is beautiful, but I must say the interior decorator dropped the ball! One would expect the interior of such a grand estate to reflect the exterior.
The lime and cranberry striped sofa and gold daperies clash with the teal blue ceiling in the livingroom and the rug doesn't match anything at all. The lamps look like they were sent over from Elvis Presley's attic. What ashame~

I see Mel is following in his idol's (Jesus') footsteps. NOT! What a glutenous PIG! Typical hypo-christian, using Jesus as a Republican mascott, while living NOTHING like Jesus. Jesus was poor, bachelor with no children. Mel is a rich, nasty, hate-filled, hillbilly, kkk-type of a bigot (just like his dad) with a dozen kids. What a typical hypo-christian. Funny how the pathetic, programmed Jesus freaks use him as a mascott & idol but live NOTHING like he did. Jesus aparently loved everyone while the Jesus idiots hate many people and try to use poeple to aquire great wealth and divide everyone. Get a clue you religious CREEPS!

Such a breathing taking home...how lucky could one get to live in a unique place like that. From the outskirts of it and inside very well detailed. If I had the money I would never hesitate in purchasing a home like that. Hats off to the person who buys it. Best of luck and enjoy it.
