Mel Gibson's Old Mill Farm, Estate of the Day

I first mentioned this listing on Sunday. The esteemed Braden Keil of the NY Post broke the story that Mel Gibson has put his Greenwich, Conn. home on the market. The listing with photos just went live today so I wanted to bring you the pictures of why this home just might be worth the $39.5 million asking price. As commenter Spectacular Bid noted on my last post about this house, Old Mill Farm is a design by architect Charles Lewis Bowman built in 1926 for his horse lover client, G.L. Ohrstrom. The home is one of the last great manor homes in Greenwich and is significant not just for the architecture but for the fact that it has 77 acres of land.
The home itself is an Elizabethan-inspired Tudor mansion of 15,800 square feet and the property has 15 bedrooms and 18 bathrooms total. The jaw-dropping room of the place is the great hall which has a 40-foot cathedral ceiling with a stone minstrel's gallery, walk-in fireplace and leaded glass ceilings. The grounds, which were done by landscape designer James Doyle, include formal gardens and a maze. There is also a terrace pool, tennis court, greenhouse, stable, staff houses, log cabin and a pond on the property. For your $39.5 million you really do get a chance to slip into a whole other world. After the jump, imagine the movie Mel could have made here.

This is an amazing piece of property with immeasurable architecture. I could imagine living there and having a wonderful time. Thank you #3 for the historical backgroung. It took me back in time during one of those old black and white movies. As for the reason Mel Gibson is selling, who cares? It's his business and I think everyone should respect that.

I think it is a shame that anyone would have a house this grand! I have a home that I am happy with...not a ton of room, but that is ok. My 2,000 sq foot home is a happy home to 5 children. I think of children that live on the streets, live in 3rd world nations and then think of this "second home" to a star (and let me tell you from working as an actor in tv and movies myself, doesn't work as hard as any ave American)...it just makes me sick!

yepper,..... makes me kind of glad I was blessed in a different way,. got the doublewide trailer, and little land, and got some gardens also, for food, not just to look at,... on the architecture style of my place, I call it homey. and my horse wouldnt know what to do with a stable, just a lean to will work for him, he dont know the difference, but maybe someday mel our paths will cross, and you will realize, it aint the house that makes the man, but the love you can provide inside.

Do you think that anti-semite will sell to a Jewish person?
Margaret Jul 19th 2007 11:13PM
Very grandiose, yet "ye olde" in decoration.
A bit on the 'moody / broody' side for my taste.
Another era - prefer something lighter and brighter.
