New York Garden House, Estate of the Day

Today's home is a 1911 West Village warehouse in New York City. The home was the former residence and art gallery of noted collector Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. and was redesigned in 1992 by the current owner. There's lots to love about this one, especially the amazing amount of outdoor space, around 2,500 square feet of terraces and gardens. The home includes rooftop gardens a lawn and even a rose garden. The home's interior clearly reveals its warehouse roots with boxy, industrial lines . There are five bedrooms and upstairs there is an enclosed lap pool with a fireplace. The listing calls it the ultimate country house in the city. It is listed at $17.9 million. After the jump, something about that pool is just not appealing.

What's wrong with the pool? I don't know if you can do real laps, but add a machine that makes you swim against the current and you are set.

Wow, one of the best houses I've seen in NYC, although I wouldn't call it a country house, it's pretty clearly modern. And I think the pool looks allright, keep in mind that this is New York and most pools are indoors, and in a house it can only be so big. The idea mentioned by John above of adding a forced current machine would be really cool.
And honestly, the price, while steep, is pretty decent for NYC considering how big this house is, and the value of the land alone.

Lap Pool...?? What a waste of an entirely usable Floor.

First, I'd get rid of the Family/ Game Room furniture, etc. which is off to the side of the Lap Pool.
I would then re-do that Lap Pool by expanding it throughout the entire Floor into the shape of a Natural Lagoon-Cove found in the Tropics & give it a Black-Bottom.
I would border the Lagoons' edge with Natural Rocks & Stones and at approx. 5-6 different locations alongside the Lagoons' edge, I would have clusters of Large Boulders (3-5 Boulders per Cluster with atleast 1 or 2 Boulders Large Enough to Sit On) including a few Boulders butting out into the Lagoon.
I would have Live Fern's growing up out of the Boulders and a little bit of Soft Green Moss growing on top of some of the Boulders, as well.
At one end of this Black-Bottom Lagoon, I would have a Stack/ Pile of Boulders approx. 10FT-12FT Tall with Live Fern's & other Green Plants growing out of all the sides & the top, then complimented with a Waterfall atop & streaming down the front-side of the Boulders as it takes its natural pathway, the result of running down several different Boulders while finally splashing into the Lagoon at a constant rate.
In certain shallow areas of the Lagoon, I'd have Tall, Round, Stone Post's inserted as underwater seating areas for guests (Similar to Bar-Stools).
I'd also add a sizable Black-Bottom Hot-Tub adjacent to the Lagoon with matching Natural Rock & Stone Edges along with a simple Waterfall pouring out of the Hot-Tub & into the Lagoon.
~ Temperatures ~
Lagoon: 78-F to 82-F
Hot-Tub: 104-F
Including many other "incidentals" which are far too many to name here.
~ So.... How is that for an Indoor Pool Room ??

Very nice NYC pad!

I love every bit of it, except the cluttered corner by the pool with the cheap looking towel cubicles and busy couches. Get rid of those and make a nice zen space for your swim laps pool, and it's a complete and utter winner for me. How utterly lovely. Wow.

But........ "K" - Aren't all my Idea's written in Response #4 regarding the Lap Pool's Cluttered Corner's/ Busy Couches/ Cheap Towel Cubicles/ Etc... better than your "Zen-Space" ??
HaHaaaa....

Now that I look at it again, the pool areas done really cheap. Are those push up tiles on the ceiling, like they have in high schools!? Best to start all over, perhaps.
K, good idea with the Zen Area. God knows you need one of those in New York City. In fact, speaking of what you need in New York City, the lap pool could be heated as well for the winter time. I know it's indoors, but the idea of swimming in a cold pool whether indoors or out does NOT appeal to me in a New York City winter. :-p

Extravagantly-Creative,
Did you just turn a perfectly good lap pool into the Playboy Mansion Pool/Grotto?
