La Dona's Treasures Up For Auction

The rather stunning picture above is a surrealist tribute to one of Mexico's most interesting characters. Maria Felix, better known as La Doña, was a Mexican film star who has been called the Mexican Marilyn Monroe and who recently inspired a line of jewelry and accessories by Cartier. The actress, who had nearly as many famous lovers as Marilyn did, was an inveterate collector paintings, furniture, couture gowns and jewelry. She died in 2002 at the age of 88 and her belongings will be auctioned off at Christie's in New York on July 17 and 18. A portion of the auction proceeds will benefit the Mexican Red Cross. The painting was created by artist Leonora Carrington in 1965 and measures 79 x 70½ in and is estimated to sell for $500,000 to $700,000.

Maria Felix was very popular among Latin American women because her characters were always stronger and more dominating than the men who surrounded her. I don't think that there was a single movie that she did in which she didn't slap, whip or stab a man. She did kiss and cuddle but only on her terms and only with the most deserving alpha male capable of putting up with her.
Felix did inspire some really good torch songs (Boleros) from one of her lovers who was also one of the best Mexican songwriters ever, Agustin Lara. Not surprisingly, he wrote about how she was mean to him. Hahaha!

I love Marilyn Monroe and I love Maria Felix, both were great sex icons, but after than you must admit that they have nothing in common. Marilyn was a lost little girl, Maria was a wild animal in the jungle. Marilyn would cry, Maria would make YOU cry. Etc. One was blonde and angelic, the other was dark and devilish. Etc
