Queen Elizabeth 2 To Become Floating Hotel

The latest extravagance in Dubai will be the Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise ship. The ship is being sold to the Dubai World firm by Carnival for a cool $100 million. The ship will be turned into a floating hotel located on a pier in the Palm Jumeirah development. The company plans to recreate the original decor and fittings of the ship that she had when she was launched in 1967. The ship has crossed the Atlantic more than 800 times and carried over 2.5 million passengers. She will be docked at the Palm Jumeirah and open for business in 2009.

I have to say as great news it is that it'll be restored to its original design, its a real shame that it couldn't have found a home on the river Clyde in Scotland, where it was originally built. One of the local newspapers there ran an article a few years ago about what'd happen when it was decommissioned and suggested a campaign to bring it home. Shame really!

The only two areas that appear much the same as they did in 1969 when the ship entered service is the Champagnge Bar (the Princess Grill Lounge) on One Deck and synagogue on Three Deck.
Do you suppose they'll keep the Champagne Bar?

I really hope so Elsewhere.
My very first overseas travel experience was on this ship when I was about 8. She left Fremantle in Australia for Africa. What a way to begin a life of travel.
