Malibu Beach Inn Set To Re-Open

Soon it will officially be summer, when homes in Malibu, California rent deep into the tens of thousands per month. Now there is another place to stay, the Malibu Beach Inn on prized Carbon Beach has had a glamorous revamp thanks to entertainment mogul David Geffen. The inn is home to 47 rooms and a fine dining restaurant open only to guests. The rooms have fireplaces, tile showers, flat screen televisions, wenge wood furnishings, stocked in-room wine racks and snacks from Dean and Deluca.
The Malibu Beach Inn is also home to a private club, the Carbon Beach Club at Malibu Beach Inn. The limited membership club gives access to the hotel's private beach, teak lounge chairs and the services of a wait staff who provide drinks and beach snacks. The beach concierge can also arrange surfing lessons and other classes. Annual memberships include a signature towel, hat, robe and t-shirt, a Carbon Beach Club charge account and exclusive monthly member-only events on the beach and Carbon Beach Club Dining Room, such as cocktail receptions, barbecues and California winemaker dinners.
Rates start in the $400 per night range and the hot spot is booked up until mid-August already.

$400 a night is fairly out of my league. But, if you want to stay in malibu, you have to pay. And the Malibu Inn is far cheaper than any vacation rental here. As far as I know, there is only one motel/hotel-style lodging option in Malibu for budget-conscious travelers, but there are a countless array of Los Angeles hotels just minutes down the Pacific Coast Highway. But if you have the money, the Malibu Inn sure is nice.

There are some pretty cheap Los Angeles hotels at www.reservediscountrooms.com

The Malibu Beach Inn was already a beautiful place before David Geffen got ahold of it. $400? Maybe they have one or two rooms at that price, but I stayed there last June and the room I paid $235 for will now go for nearly $700. It's nice they added a dining room, but why was it necessary to triple prices and turn this charming hotel into yet another haven for the very rich?

The "new" and allegedly improved Malibu Beach Inn certainly sounds nice, but I'd take Casa Malibu over it any day. To me, that's the REAL Malibu and at a much more reasonable price.

I passed by recently and saw that the Inn was renovating. I put up myself and some friends in April 2004, for my 50th birthday. I couldn't do that today given the new price scheme. I tend to agree with one of the writers above, is it really necessary to make it impossible for most people ever to go there? It wasn't cheap at 235 a room, which is what I paid for each room I got (4 I believe) for two nights. It was good enough for Diana Ross and her family when I was there at the price it used to be. I'll bet she thought of it as a nice hideaway, where she got good accomodations without kleig lights. I thought of it as a nice hideaway for a middle aged woman to put up a few friends and herself, a little splurge. I am sure it will be beautiful, but one less place to go. . . .in a limited hotel area. I feel kind of sad that it got discovered and changed so radically. Oh, well.
