Plaza Sets A New York Record

When I first started hearing about the plans to turn the Plaza Hotel into condos, the predictions that records would be set began to be bandied about. Now it looks that it has come to pass. The New York Observer is reporting that an apartment at the recently redone Plaza Hotel has gone to contract for at least $50 million, making it the biggest apartment sale in New York City. The Plaza will also be home to real estate kingpin Harry Macklowe, Bear Stearns C.E.O. James Cayne, race-car mogul Flavio Briatore, Tommy Hilfiger and Jocelyn Wildenstein. The big question is who is the buyer.

I'm with #1. Big f-ing deal.

I can tell you this: I really wouldn't want the place even if I could afford to buy it (which I can't). After you buy it, everyone would have their hand out for anything they would do for you expecting you to grease their palm. You wouldn't have a moments peace.
NYC is #1 May 24th 2007 5:26PM
This is to the posters in #1 one and #2: Good thing you two don't want a condo in the PLAZA. You can barely make your payments on your trailers. Some people who work hard for a living deserve a beautiful and prestigous address; and the PLAZA is it! Jealous people need not apply!

To #3... Why is it that someone who doesn't want an apartment there must live in trailer parks? Can't you support your city without being rude? There are many beautiful places to live in NYC.

I'm happy for those that can afford the Plaza. It shows that capitalism and free enterprise still exist in the USA.

The sad thing is that people live in extreme poverty just a few miles away. I don't understand greed. The 50 million could help 100's of families get in homes through habitat for humanity

who really cares who the idiot is

The richer are getting richer, and the poorer are most certainly getting poorer. Who gives a New York City rat? One thing is for sure. Whoever bought this apartment is a damn fool, and could have used the money to donate to charities, and also to the less fortunate. I pray that when I become successful in life, I just want one home, and one car, and that would make me happy.
Why cant we all just get along? May 24th 2007 6:17PM
Clara in #5, there are NO trailer parks in Manhattan. The real Estate is too pricey to let trash live here. The homeless are bad enough! Obviously the first two posting people are jealous; but #3 shouldn't assume everyone that can't afford luxury lives in a trailer park elsewhere.
What is WRONG with everyone? May 24th 2007 6:22PM
Why is it, regardless of the posting topic, one, two or more people start to FIGHT? What is WRONG with everyone nowadays? How scary this country is getting; our own PEOPLE can't even post a freaking comment without it errupting into a feud! GROW UP, PEOPLE!

Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z WHO GIVES A SH*T ABOUT FILTHY RICH SELFISH-ASS PEOPLE! THEY DON'T GIVE A DAMN WHETHER WE LIVE OR DIE!!

To the idiot in #6. WHY should this person who bought a $50 million condo at the PLAZA hotel donate that money to Habitats for Humanity? It's blantly obvious that person WORKED to get that kind of money, and they should be allowed to reap the fruits of their labor by buying a luxury Condo in the PLAZA! Habitats for Humanity is just another hand out for people that don't want to WORK for a living! I'm so tired of paying such high taxes to subsidize welfare, etc. so these lazy people can continue to sit on their fat asses, not work, pop out illigitimate babies and get everything for FREE while everyone else has to WORK for a living!

$50 Million plus is a lot of money. And that much money would have done a lot of good for a lot of people. I don't begrudge someone who make enough money to afford this from buying it. While a lot of people would rather they spend their money on the poor, it is their money. Also, so many people that make this kind of money do give a nice amount to the poor. Who knows, this $50 million apartment owner could very well be filanthropic and still be able to live nicely. Let's hope this is the case.

geez..if i had $50 million to spend on housing, i would surely not want to live on top of and next to people. i wouldn't want to live in a (filthy) glamorous city. i think i would buy myself a nice little private island in the south pacific, hire a staff of personal chefs, trainers, etc, and hook up a satelite. never again would i be forced to see another snotty face, a bum asking for change, or a tourist. with $50 million, who needs annoying neighbors dahling?! otherwise i feel you have just wasted your $50 million for the right to say you are the biggest dummy in nyc.

Hi -- I'd just like to say that I've been to the Plaza when it was a hotel. It's a great location! I'll take two apartments...........!!

TO whoever wrote #12: You couldnt be more correct! I live in a nice town and for some reason every single damn apartment and condo complex in the area is packed with jobless white trash who get to live there because they receive section 8 housing! Get the projects out of my town! My family has worked hard for us to be able to live in this town, why should some drug dealing a-hole get to live here for $150 a month (which they probably pay with drug money)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so glad that the taxes which come out of my paycheck every week are allowing them to receive brand new housing while units in the same complex which are available to someone like me cost $1500 a month for a 1-bedroom! Well, there goes the neighborhood.
DD May 24th 2007 8:21PM
I agree with a few comments, especially the last one. People who work hard and save their money should be allow to spend whatever they want on real estate. They deserve it! There are too many people taking advantage of taxpayers $$ living on Section 8, in the projects, etc. I've seen too much in my lifetime and can tell many stories.

The real fools are those who think the pissant buying the 50M condo worked hard. My father worked hard for 45 years. With little hard work I've made more in one day several times than he did in his whole life. Modern America rewards greed, not hardwork.
