A New Look at Champ D'Or, Estate of the Day

One of my first posts for Luxist, before it even launched in Dec 2004, was Champ D'Or. Long before I even thought about estate of the day, this one captivated me. Most of all perhaps because it is one of those golden follies, built by the Goldfields no less, that real estate legends are made of. Shortly after completing the five-year project in 2002, the Goldfields decided their house was too big and put it on the market.
I decided to take another look at the home now that it has a website of its own with virtual tours, video and a photo gallery for all your luxury real estate gawking needs. The Texas home is 48,000 square feet of chateau-inspired luxury with details like a tearoom, garden room, ballroom and mini-theater. One of my favorite features is the two-story mahogany library complete with a winding wooden staircase but others might love the private hair salon, steam room, weight room, gfitwrap room or bowling alley. Many, many features but only six bedrooms. It has been listed at a variety of prices but is currently listed at $59.55 million. After the jump, this home wins my vote for most impressive staircase.
[Thanks, Kristi for reminding me of this fabulous property]

You just aren't going to ever make something this huge look like anything but a lovely hotel or bed and breakfast. I'd love to stay there for a week, but I wouldn't want to live there.

This house is about 2 miles from my home, and we watched it being built. Why, oh why would you build an estate of this size in Hickory Creek, TX. There is nothing luxurious grand about this area - N. Central Texas. The best store we have is Wal-Mart!! And only 6 bedrooms? If you own a chateau, you entertain on a grand scale. What do you do - put all your guests in rooms together. I am anxious to see what people who could afford this home have to say about it. Lovely - but just way over the top for this area.
