Bearfire Resort, Skiing Comes To Texas

Skiing in Texas? Texas is creating a ski slope where no slope existed before. Bearfire Resort will be a man-made mountain that will feature ski slopes spread over 650,000 square feet in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Bearfire Resort will also have a 600-room hotel, a convention center, and a spa at the base of the ski mountain. Bearfire will use virtual ski surface technology called Snowflex, which is currently being used at a bunch of places in Europe. The resort's main attraction will be its outdoor ski and snowboard mountain with ski runs, chair lifts, competition half-pipes, toboggans, snow tubing, and ski caves. When it is completed, the man-made mountain range will rank among the world's largest buildings. The project is expected to cost $375 million and should be completed in 2008.

I cant wait for this!!! I live in Oklahoma, and it kills me that the ski resorts are so far away!! If they really do build this, I will have access to skiing 365 days a year!! YEAH!!!!!!

I'm from the Dallas-area, and I've heard nothing about this. Wow, only 325 mil? That's the going rate for new stadiums.
All I'm imagining now is a bunch of fat asses trying to snowboard. God help us.

I think the conconcept is brilliant. The only drawback is you have to go to Texas to enjoy it. closets

It would cost a hell of a lot more to build this monstrosity than $375m. I think that's just for the slope. If that is the correct price, that's going to be one crap build and not very luxurious and therefore not an appropriate post.

Wow, this is outlandish! I definitely would mind being able to go snowboarding an hour from my home in Dallas!
Mike Apr 23rd 2007 2:12PM
Are there any other areas like this? Has anyone ever skied on this fake stuff?

Can anyone say RUG BURN?

Another example of lets spoil ourselves at the expense of our environment. If you have the need to ski go to where the snow is, that snow is a product of the natural environment not the product of burning thousands of gallons of fossel fuel which contributes to global warming which will create the need to burn more fuel to maintain that snow. I guess that's why it's called the snowball effect.

I think this is great. I wish they would bring something like this to Hawaii so I wouldnt have to board on the ridiculous hard slopes of Mauna Kea in the winter or fly my butt to a real ski place.
Cary Apr 26th 2007 9:40PM
Good. Now maybe the Texans will stay out of Colorado.
Carol Apr 26th 2007 9:44PM
I think this is yet another manmade disgrace. Snow in Texas is unnatural and will only contribute to the decline of the environment. It's all about money once again - ski resorts make money.
The recent stir about the disappearing honeybees ought to be a prime example of what's about to take place.
God is going to give humans a major wakeup call really soon, and personally I love it.
John Apr 26th 2007 9:53PM
Good Grief, global warming? To expensive? Why does everyone feel like an expert on everything. IT'S CAPITALISM FOR GOODNESS SAKE! Enjoy the resort and roast your weenies at the base lodge bar-b-que pit. Can't we have fun anymore without being politically correct?

"Chill" people! I don't know anything about this snowflex, but if it is a viable skiing surface, why not? Having an attraction for locals to ski on that would probably not go to another state is not a bad thing. Since it is fake snow I don't see the hardcore skiers flocking to Dallas to ski.
If you want to see real decadance look up the ski run that was built in the desert of Dubai! I just watched a Discover channel show about it. Incredible engineering marvel.
Kimberly Apr 26th 2007 10:06PM
Snowflex is like a stretchy, springy carpet. They make it because it means you don't need to keep the temperature near freezing or have snow machines working to make snow.
You install it once and go, and it's there 24 7.
There is NO environmental stuff from this, yeash.
In fact, there's more environmental from traditional man made snow, because its being made where it doesn't belong (typical in a mall - but a lot of ski resorts do lay down some man made snow, or create ski areas).
Environment wise, I like this stuff better. And from what I've been reading (like some of you have neglected to do), it's better than man made snow and safer than real snow, and just as good.

Im glad that they are makin it, keep the Texans out of the place where it has the greatest snow on EARTH! Utah and Ski magazine rated powder mountain as the #1 snow in north america! utah is BY FAR the best place to ski not over priced colorado

I think is a wonderful idea, but nothing beats skiing in Montana. I have access to Brider Bowl, Big Sky Resort and Moonlight Basin all only 45 minutes away. But for those who aren't as lucky as I am I think its awsome idea.
kelsey tucker Apr 26th 2007 11:42PM
i think this is awesome, ive always wanted to learn to snowboard but lived in dallas all my life, i cant freakin wait, i think this is gonna be so cool, to bad im leaving for waco in the fall, but ill be back
sue Apr 26th 2007 11:44PM
This would be great! If they can have something similar in Dubai, then we can have it in Dallas. Even though I live in Michigan, I would definitely visit such a resort in Dallas.
Cary-I thought that was a very funny comment!

What is the average age of people replying to this??? Global Warming from a FAKE skiing surface?
My state is better than your state?
I've heard more intelligent comments from a 5 year old. Reminds me of a quote and some good advice, better to be silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and confirm it.
Jessica Apr 27th 2007 12:04AM
What a waste of money. How about that money goes toward fixing the planet and global warming instead of human consumption and gluttony?
