$1,000 Mint Juleps Return to the Kentucky Derby
Last year Woodford Reserve gave 50 traditional mint juleps a $1000 upgrade at the Kentucky Derby by using exotic ingredients and serving them in gold cups with silver straws. With the drinks providing such a unique keepsake and proceeds benefiting retired horses and jockeys through Thoroughbred Charities of America, the $1000 juleps were huge a success. So this year they'll be coming around again -- only with even more flair than before. This year there will be a julep cup representing each of the Derby winners all the way from the first, Aristides, to the most recent, Barbaro. Those two, plus the 11 triple crown winners in between, will be auctioned off online between April 17th and May 1st -- and of course somewhat of a bidding war is expected over Barbaro's cup (it will be interesting to see who wins out on that one). Altogether this year there will be a grand total of 133 special edition mint juleps made, with only 10 being held back for sale at the actual race. In addition to those 10, and the 13 up for online auction, 109 are available to purchase online for $1000 each (first come first buy), and one will be reserved and sent to this year's Derby winner, free of charge.
As before, the juleps will leave nothing wanting in the way of exotic ingredients from around the world, featuring mint from Ireland, organic sugar from Australia, ice from the Bavarian Alps, and of course bourbon from Woodford Reserve.

wow all of you people defending the animals need to stop, look at the world and see that they are just animals they are only intelegent because of us.
also after a horse has run its entire life it can not do anything most horses get horrible problems in their feet my sixth grade core teachers horse's feet were so infected she had to put it to sleep so you minus well kill it(killing horses isnt as bad these days because they dont even feel it.....what do you think they do to prisoners) and turn it into soap or a horse buger
i beleive that killing horses in cruel ways like slitting their throats and letting them bleed to death or other sick things is wrong and we should use it like the indians did instead of wasting the whole horse
ps # 15 is crazy

Number 1, I understand what you mean. I understand everyone's point.I agree most with number 16 though. Besides, if your are homeless that usually means you don't care about life at all. That means you or some one in the family didn't care of school or life. Animals are cool. Animals that race are cool. Number 16 again proved a point by saying that the animals may breed and make a crap load of money off that. I would give a little, maybe $50 to both. That would at least be every year.

Ok, great idea, send all of those thousands of dollars and make a new factory. You with me? Ok now we take this new factory and make *surprise* Glue! Now the best part, get all these homeless people that you all care about and give them a job in the factory. That way everyone wins. The money goes somewhere worthwhile, your precious horses won't die because none of the bums want to work (maybe that's why they are bums), and everyone can stop caring about the bums because you'll realize that most of them just choose not to work and they could help themsleves. Oh and after that you could always turn it into a chinese factory (1st one ever, I mean who wouldn't want microwaveable chinese at your super market) to take care of all these stray cats and dogs that seem to be everywhere. I should be president. And last, those better be some darn good drinks for 1,000 dollars.

you all are just mad bc you don't have the money to buy the drink! Also horses are like people too! Why would you harm such a preety creature! all of you that think the horses are worthless are just mad ! i hope that every rich person in america buys that drink ! just soo the horses can rub it in ur faces ! SAVE THE HORSES!!! bc they don't have a choice like humans do!
;) Apr 30th 2007 9:14PM
Dude, who knows how super rich people think. If I had that kind of money I'd probably blow it on something stupid too.

First, #20 is an idiot, not only because of their name, but because animals were here, and as intelligent (if they can be described as intelligent) as ever BEFORE HUMANS WERE.
Second, the whole glue & kabobs thing is drastic, but
the decision on whether the horse lives, or is euthanized is up to the owner. I personally think that giving the money to a charity for people who have never even had $10, much less $1000, would be the best idea, but in the end, it's your money, and if you want to give it to an old horse, a charity, a homeless shelter, a school, etc is up to you.
blowing a grand on one single mint julep...stupid, but your choice...
and #15, ill have a drink or three... if you're buying...
Amused Apr 30th 2007 11:01PM
Sorry, i meant #11...i still need that drink *headache*
#15 isn't worth mentioning (oops...)

Finnally someone agrees with me... same with vegetarians that wont eat meat because they dont believe in slaughter... Animals were put here for a reason..

I had a hard day. I just so happen to see this. And when i first read the article i was like "whoa, a thousand dollars on a drink. People dont know what to do with their money." And then i read all these comments and i died laughing. I couldnt even focus on the topic anymore. Horses, the homeless, asian puppy food. LMFAO! The matter is not funny but the way it was handled and discussed was classic. It really made me forget about my problems! You guys should make a commercial out of this. It would make money.
lank May 6th 2007 5:26PM
This sort of misguided passion makes me wish we could all get this fired up about issues that affect humans directly. But yeah, the whole glue thing is just wrong.
Moroseth May 1st 2007 1:49AM
#13 is an idiot
"How would you feel?" is not a valid question do to the fact that if you are dead you don't feel anything... also horse kabobs sound delicious and everyone needs more glue. The horse serves a better purpose feeding people and sticking stuff together anyhow
>:D

The horse racing industry makes so much money, they dont need $1000 to take care of a retired horse. These stables will do just fine without the money. The money needs to go to some real issue of the world. AIDS or cancer research, childerns foundations, just to start. If the money is going to be used for breeding, the person makes money off of selling them. Agian sport makes good money for most involved, this money should go to someone that needs it, not some cheap skate millioniare that doesnt want to pay for something.

OMG,,,this was the most entertaining blog I have read in a long time.I am still chuckling. However,,this is the real deal, people that have no compassion for animals frighten the hell out of me. People that want to save every single animal and put them up in hotels,,,frighten the hell out of me. Can we not agree to meet in the middle? So, keep the gold cup, make the damn julep and serve in decorative plastic cup (and ofcourse recycle) take 50 bucks and donate to the cause, and then take the rest of the cash and bet on the freakin derby.
Blake May 2nd 2007 10:33PM
I just want to say that this $1000 mint julep deal is really cool. If i was wealthy enough I would dro a grand on it. Mint juleps are a great tradition of the Derby, and the Derby is a great tradition of America. It's just a cool collectors item, which people drop thousands on collectors items all the time, for example baseball jerseys and autographed balls and any other sports paraphanalia, and no one is bitchin about that, so why complain about this.
Tessa May 2nd 2007 1:54PM
I don't agree with number 20 animals are NOT smart beacuse of us. Animals are soooooo much smarter. And how would you like it if you were turned into glue. If you want i can go do it right now to you. Humans are NOT THE ONLY LIVING THING ON THE EARTH. This would be the same thing if i went and turned your cat or dog into glue. How would you feel about that. I love horses and i don't think that any animal should have to deal woth what hummans make them deal with.
Tessa May 3rd 2007 2:53PM
Here is a question how many animals become extint beacuse of humans? You have NO heart if you think that humans are the only important thing on the earth.
