Limited Edition Mystery Masterpiece, The Most Expensive Pen Ever Created

I'm not sure how you would write with it, but the Limited Edition Mystery Masterpiece, a joint creation between Montblanc and Van Cleef & Arpels, is one amazing pen. Both companies celebrated their centennials in 2006 and the pen is meant to showcase each company's area of expertise. There are three variations, set either with rubies, sapphires or emeralds, and accented by diamonds. There are three versions of each pen for a total of nine. Each pen has 840 diamonds and more than 20 carats of gemstones set in a Van Cleef & Arpels patented "Mystery Setting" that conceals the stone settings. A groove is made on the culet, the bottom facet of the stone, which is then slid onto the threads of the lattice design so that the stones can be held in place side by side without any visible support. The Mystery sells for $730,000, making it the most expensive writing instrument ever created. Truly a masterpiece of the jeweler's art, I just wish I could wear it around my neck.

When it runs out of ink, do you need to throw it out and buy a new one?
ron Feb 18th 2007 10:39AM
ha ha - wonders if it writes in platinum as well -
someone will leave the thing in the house on a table - a unsuspecting child will say wow nice and pick it up and take it to school unknowing its a ritzy flashy extravagant token of mere elegance - mom will say oh no how did I ever misplace my 700,000 pen - and crash about the place tearing up everything in sight to find it - only to find out when the child comes home he gave it to the teacher cause she said it was so beautiful - ha ha
$700,000 pen - pathetic -
give one to the president - maybe then he can make a few wise decisions before he signs something stupid ...

Why is it that every time an expensive item is displayed here that some people feel the need to remind everyone that there are starving people somewhere in the world? People don't starve because someone spends $750,000 on a pen, or $750 million on something else. They starve because of oppresive governments, ignorant rebels, and just foolish decisions and priorities made by a group of people over a period of time. Keep your socio-political comments somewhere where they are applicable, and not in a thread discussing an incredible piece of craftsmanship. People throughout history have continued to reach for something bigger, better, more beautiful, a higher level of skill, etc. and it has yeilded some of mankinds most treasured and beautiful creations. What a magnificant work of art.

for that kind of money that damn pen should write best selling novela on its own, and then get up and make me breakfast.
Anne Hardin Feb 18th 2007 11:07AM
The writer needs to check her spelling: culet is the bottom facet of a stone; cutlet is something I eat for lunch at the five-and-dime.

What would really be impressive, is if some anonymous buyer would buy them all, and donate the money to charities

The creation of this Pen goes beyone the word of elegance. A creative mind is a gift! Those who worry about starvation around the world, when was the last time you donated?

Thats a great deal 750,000.00 for a pen i have a deal maybe not as good as this but very close. I have a unique place in Florida 40 acres with 7 acres of water 80 feet from the highest point to the deepest spot in the lake. Anyone that buys a pen for 750,000.00 should own their own private lake to sit and drink their Latte and write their book or whatevery they like to do.

We would all love to be wealthy enough to afford a pen at this price, but I would hope none of us would be soul less enough to allow children to go to bed hungry, if they even have a bed, or allow anyone to do without something essential to live. I have found out the only thing you can do with a house is live in it whether it cost 50 thou or 50 mil and sadness effects all of us rich or poor. So enjoy you pen

It's a whole lot of money for something that is impractical and plain ugly. The collaboration efforts on the part of both companies does not work well at all here.

I THINK THAT IS A WASTE OF MONEY, THE MONEY AND THE JEWLERY CAN GO TO MUCH BETTER THINGS THAN A PEN,WAKEUP.!!!!!!
David Chiarella Feb 18th 2007 11:26AM
How fucking rediculous.
Carfan Feb 18th 2007 11:29AM
This pen is what I would write a love letter to Jessica Simpson with. I lose enough pens, I may as well just give the money away to charity, asssuming I had it. Thats when you know you have too much money, when you can piss away that much money on a pen. By the way Lisa, (post#3) where did you find a house for $73,000? Certainly not in Seattle, probably not on the west coast.

I don't get some of you people. If I earn my own money, can't I spend it on what I want? Why feed some useless third world country. I bust my ass for my money, and spend it how I want, on what I want.
I mean I wouldn't buy something as stupid as this pen. But I don't give a rats ass about some foreign country's people. I might think about donating to a charade in our own country, but I'd keep it here anyways. I grew up poor, and made all my own money. I feel that everyone can do the same thing. All of these "poor" people are just lazy, and I didn't get any free rides, so why should they?
I'm outta here, I've gotta go pick up my $400,000.00 Lamboghini, from the dealership this afternoon.

It saddens me to know that such self-indulgence is alive and well in this day and age. Someone who feels they need to spend money to be noticed is truley lacking in self-esteem, money only pays bills, it can not improve an empty soul.
aaron Feb 18th 2007 11:44AM
i'd use it to write a check for more whiskey
Frank Feb 18th 2007 11:43AM
Eighteen thousand children are dying per day and here there are selling some pen for all that money (almost 1M) What is wrong with regular pen!

I don't understand some of you people. If I earn my money, do I not have a right to buy what I please with it? I grew up dirt poor and earned everything myself. Why should I give a rats ass about some foreign county's starving people? Or some lazy ghetto, brother who is jobless, and homeless.I earned all my own money from day one, and refuse to give it to some ungrateful, useless, third world, dirt-hole country, for any reason. I'm not a greedy person, but I just feel that if everyoe busted their ass the way I do/did for my money they'd be ok,too. Some useless ghetto bum asked me for money this morning, I told him to get a job, and a paycheck..that's what they told me and I did it. Now worth several million, I say to all asking for a donation..."Get a job, and a paycheck" there's plenty of work to go around and plenty money to go around. I'll pay someone $400 dollars a room, to come and paint my house...any takers? Or do you all have back problems or heart problems, or you're doctor said you shouldn't lift anything,BS excuses like that? I asked a guy with a " Will work for food " sign if he could paint.. he had every excuse in the world why he can't. This happens every time I test one of them with a work offer. I asked one of them to come over and drive the ride-on lawn mower, because the care taker was on vacation.. he told me the vibration in the lawnmower hurt his back..what a joke. I told him, "No pain, No gain". He finished the lawn, with no complaints, and was paid, and on his way. Why sould I give to some foreign country, when half the people in our country are foreign anyways? You people with these "foreign country" and "Starving Children" comments drive me up the wall.

What a wonderful contest to figure out the nine people worthy of such selfish greed when the children are starving right before their eyes: Lets see Trump one for his wife, Trump one for his daughter, Trump one for his son and of course a closet one for himself that is 4 out of nine, Opra would love one to write in her diary but we will never know and that would be good Opra girlfriend is that five or still four, who can add to my list, PS Don't be mad Opra I think you deserve a good writing pen for all you do for the children of the world; I just can not afford to get this one for you my son needs a kidney instead and I can not buy those either. We are still at 4 everybody don't count OPRA you know better, smiles. Way too classy of a lady. Awaiting the challenge, Linda

Sorry did not mean to be too harse on Trump but..I really believe if he were truly wealthy he is already that extravagant look at his apartment gold trimmed this and that really..
